Contextualization

The Portuguese language is a very rich communication tool that has a variety of elements that compose it and make our expressions richer and more precise. In this project, we will focus our attention on one of these elements: the Vocative.

The Vocative is a term used to call, summon, or interpellate someone. It is an independent term in the sentence, not linked to it by a preposition. It can be a single word, like a proper name, or an expression. It can come at the beginning, middle, or end of the sentence. It is usually highlighted by a comma, but this is not always the case.

This important linguistic element helps us to direct our speech or text to someone specific, promoting greater clarity and effectiveness in communication. Having a good understanding of the Vocative can help us to make better use of the language, constructing more organized sentences with clear meaning.

The use of the vocative is a common and very relevant practice in our daily lives. It is often used in informal conversations when we want to get someone's attention. In these moments, we are using the vocative without even realizing it.

In addition to everyday situations, the vocative is very present in literary texts and works of art. In literature, for example, writers use the vocative to explore the relationship between characters or to mark a character's identity. In paintings and music, the vocative can be used to invoke a figure, a feeling, or a place.

To deepen your knowledge on the subject, we recommend the following resources:

  1. Book "Portuguese Grammar" by Mário Perini (Chapter dedicated to the Vocative)
  2. Website "Portuguese Clarified" - Link to the page about Vocative
  3. Video Lesson "Vocative: what is it and how to use it?" from the Youtube channel Curso Enem Gratuito.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Vocative Voice"

Project Objective

The objective of this activity is to provide students with a fun and collaborative learning experience of the use of the Vocative in the Portuguese language. Students will create a short script for a dialogue, a commercial script, or even a short play where they will use the Vocative in a creative and assertive way.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group will choose whether to create a dialogue, a commercial script, or a short play. In their content, students should use the Vocative creatively, thus demonstrating their understanding of its use.

The work can be done in two stages. In the first stage, the students will carry out a research and elaboration of the script or text. In the second stage, they will be able to rehearse and present the production to the class, in the case of a dialogue or play, or write the final work, in the case of a commercial.

Materials Required

  • Book "Portuguese Grammar" by Mário Perini.
  • Access to the internet.
  • Paper and pen for the elaboration of the script/text.

Detailed step-by-step instructions for carrying out the activity

  1. Formation of groups.
  2. Choice of what will be produced (dialogue, commercial or play).
  3. Research and study on the correct use of the Vocative, using the chapter of the indicated book and the suggested links.
  4. Debates among the group members about the topic and the best way to approach it.
  5. Elaboration of the script or text, with creative and correct use of the Vocative.
  6. Rehearsing the presentation, in case of a dialogue or a play.
  7. Presentation or delivery of the final work.

At the end of the project, students must write a document in the form of a report containing 4 main topics:

  1. Introduction: In this topic, the theme of the Vocative, its relevance, and practical application should be contextualized, as well as the objective of the project carried out by the group.

  2. Development: Here, students should explain the theory behind the Vocative, explain the activity carried out in detail, indicate the methodology used and, finally, present and discuss the results obtained.

  3. Conclusion: The students should conclude the work by returning to their main points, explaining the lessons learned and the conclusions drawn about the Vocative and the work carried out.

  4. Bibliography: Finally, students should indicate the sources they used to work on the project, such as the indicated book, web pages, videos, etc.

This activity is not only an assessment of your knowledge of the Vocative, but an opportunity to develop socio-emotional skills such as time management, communication, problem solving, creative thinking, and proactivity.
