Theatrical Production

Contextualization

Theatrical production is a complex and multidisciplinary process that requires skills in administration, direction, artistic creation, design, technology, and more. Our main goal is to understand how all these different skills come together to create a theatrical performance, from conception to the final presentation.

Theory

Within the theatrical universe, there are four topics that are extremely important for its understanding: handling and interpreting scripts, directing and producing a play, set design, and actors' performance.

The script is the backbone of a theatrical production; it dictates the sequence of events, the characters, the dialogues, and even the actors' feelings and intentions. Direction and production, on the other hand, are the driving forces that take the play from the script to the stage; they involve team organization, rehearsal coordination, cast selection, schedule creation, and problem-solving.

Set design is essential for the setting of a play. It is through it that the audience is transported to the universe of the story. Eliciting emotions through colors, shapes, textures, and the arrangement of scenic elements is a fundamental task for the set designer.

Finally, the actors' performance is what brings the play to life. The way they interpret the characters, express their emotions, and move on stage is what engages the audience and conveys the essence of the story.

Contextualization

Theatrical production is an artistic expression that has a direct influence on society and culture. Theater functions as a mirror that reflects the events, behaviors, and feelings of our reality, making us recognize ourselves in the stories told. Furthermore, its production involves a series of skills that can be applied in various areas of life.

The importance of theater goes beyond artistic expression. Producing a theatrical piece requires teamwork, time management, problem-solving skills, and creativity. These competencies are useful not only in the workplace but also in our daily lives.

Practical Activity: "Let's Get to Work: Producing Our Own Theatrical Piece"

Project Objective

This project aims to expose students to the theatrical production process, from script interpretation to the final performance. During the activity, it will be necessary to put into practice communication, time management, creative thinking, and problem-solving.

Detailed Project Description

In this activity, students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5, and each group will be tasked with adapting, producing, and presenting an act from a famous Brazilian theatrical piece. The process will be divided into several stages to deal with the complexity of theatrical production.

Required Materials

  • Writing materials
  • Books, websites, and videos on theatrical production
  • Material resources for set design (recyclables, cardboard, fabrics, paints, etc.)
  • Cameras for documentation and recording of the final piece

Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Script Selection: Each group will choose an important act from a Brazilian theatrical piece to adapt and produce.

  2. Script Interpretation: Students should analyze the chosen script, discussing its meanings, characters, themes, and how they will adapt it for their production.

  3. Planning and Production: In this stage, students will plan their production. This includes casting, production planning, set design, rehearsals, and more.

  4. Execution of the Piece: After preparation, students will perform the theatrical piece. This can be done in front of the class or recorded on video.

  5. Documentation and Report: Throughout the project, students will be encouraged to document the production process, recording photos and videos. In the end, they should write a report on the project, detailing each stage and the acquired learning.

Project Deliverables

The main project deliverables are:

  1. The production and presentation of the theatrical piece.

  2. A final report detailing the theatrical production process, which should include:

    • Introduction: Contextualization of the theme, explanation of the relevance and real-world application as well as the objective of this project.
    • Development: Theory on theatrical production, detailed explanation of the activity, methodology used, and presentation and discussion of the results obtained.
    • Conclusion: Summarize the main points, detail the learnings, and draw conclusions about the project.
    • Bibliography: Indication of the sources used to work on the project.

At the end of the project, it is expected that students will be able to understand and appreciate the complexity and work behind a theatrical production, and apply the learning in other contexts, both academic and personal.
