Throughout history, there have been many migratory movements and colonizations that resulted in the global expansion of culture, technology, economy, and consequently, languages. Among these languages, English emerged as a dominant language, mainly due to the power of the British Empire in the 18th and 19th centuries, and the subsequent influence of the United States in the 20th century.

The English language initially developed in England, being a fusion of Germanic languages brought by the Anglo-Saxons, with influences from Latin and French. With the expansion of the British Empire, English traveled around the globe, being established in colonized territories in different parts of the world, including the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. In the end, the presence of English extended from Canada to Australia, from India to Jamaica.

English not only spread geographically but also infiltrated numerous sectors of global life, including science, economy, and politics. It was widely adopted as the lingua franca of science, with most academic research in many fields being published in English. Similarly, it became the language of choice for international business and diplomacy, enabling effective communication among people from different linguistic backgrounds.

Introduction and Importance of the Topic

The importance of the English language in global communication cannot be underestimated. Due to its omnipresence, understanding the origin, expansion, and influence of the English language is crucial to understanding the modern world. Furthermore, it is essential for anyone who wishes to effectively participate in the global environment.

In addition to practical advantages, studying the expansion of the English language is also a window to history. Through this study, we can explore how waves of colonization, trade, and globalization shaped the world and the cultures that inhabit it. At the same time, examining the role of English in the modern world allows us to reflect on issues of power, identity, and interculturality.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "The Rise of English: A Global Journey"

Project Objective:

This project aims to deepen students' knowledge about the expansion of the English language in the world. Students will conduct research on the influence of the English language in different sectors such as science, economy, politics, as well as explore the importance of English in intercultural communication and in the construction of identities in the globalized world.

Detailed Project Description:

1. Formation of Groups: Groups will be formed by 3 to 5 students, with a total of approximately 12 hours of work per student.

2. Research and Discussion: Each group must conduct extensive research on the expansion of the English language. This includes, but is not limited to, the colonization of the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Oceania by Great Britain, the spread of English as the lingua franca of the sciences, and its importance in international economy and politics.

3. Case Analysis: In addition to research, groups must choose two countries - one from a different continent than the other - that were colonized by the English, for a more detailed analysis of how English influenced the culture, economy, science, and education in those locations.

4. Production of Materials: Each group will be responsible for creating a slide presentation and producing a video (even made with a cell phone) of up to 15 minutes, explaining the points above and sharing their case analysis of the chosen countries.

5. Writing the Report: After completing the practical part of the project, students must write a document reporting in the format of a report containing, but not limited to, four main topics: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used.

1. Formation of groups.

5. Selection of the two countries for analysis and research on them.
6. Preparation of the slide presentation and video recording.
7. Writing the report with Introduction, Development, Conclusion, and Bibliography.

Project Deliverables and How They Connect to the Activity:

Students must deliver the slide presentation, the video, and the report at the end of the project.

The slide presentation and the video should expose the knowledge acquired during the research and demonstrate the students' ability to present complex information clearly and concisely.

The report should be written clearly and objectively, with an introduction that contextualizes the theme and states the objectives; a development that details the methodology, the research conducted, the case analysis, and the discussions made by the group; a conclusion that summarizes the main points, and explains the learnings obtained and the conclusions drawn about the project; and a bibliography with all sources used for the project.

Each deliverable is an opportunity to demonstrate the technical and socio-emotional skills developed during the project, such as research, debate, analysis, time management, communication, problem-solving, creative thinking, and proactivity.
