Context

A country's energy matrix is the distribution of the energy sources it uses to meet its consumption needs. These sources can be renewable like solar, wind, and hydroelectric or non-renewable like oil, coal, and natural gas. Each country's choice regarding its energy matrix is influenced by several factors such as resource availability, geographical, technological, and political aspects.

The Asian continent is particularly interesting for the study of energy matrices due to its geographical and cultural diversity. Countries like China, India, and Russia are among the world's largest energy producers and consumers, each with unique characteristics and challenges. Asia is also home to some of the world's least developed countries, which face distinct challenges in energy generation and distribution.

Importance of the Topic

The study of energy matrices is essential for understanding current geopolitical relationships and environmental problems. Energy is a key element of the global economy, and how each country produces and consumes it can have major impacts on the global climate.

Understanding the use of different energy sources and their impacts is fundamental for developing public policies for sustainable energy. In addition, this study allows for a better understanding of the socioeconomic issues related to energy production and consumption.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Energy & Asia: A Comparative Analysis of Energy Matrices

Project Objective

The objective of this project is for students to research, analyze, and compare the energy matrices of three Asian countries: China, India, and Russia. Each group will research the distribution of energy sources in these countries and present a detailed report on their findings, as well as a visual presentation model of the information. The activity will last approximately 12 to 15 hours.

Project Description in Detail

This project is an opportunity for students to learn about energy matrices and how they relate to geography, politics, economics, and environmental issues. In addition, this project will also involve the discipline of Math, as students will analyze data on energy consumption, production, and sources.

Groups will be composed of 3 to 5 students. The research, analysis, and presentation will be carried out in collaborative stages, ensuring that all group members participate equally.

Students should research and understand how and why these countries choose their respective energy matrices, and what the impacts of these choices are. They should also discuss how these choices affect the environment and geopolitical relationships.

Materials Needed

  • Internet access for research and data collection
  • Writing materials (pencils, paper, etc.)
  • Presentation software (Microsoft PowerPoint, Google Slides, or similar)
  • Word processing software (Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or similar)

Step by Step

  1. Group definition and work organization: Form groups of 3 to 5 students and discuss how you will divide the parts of the research among yourselves. Make a plan for how the group will collaborate and distribute the tasks throughout the project.

  2. Research: Each group should research the energy matrices of the three countries: China, India, and Russia. Groups should seek data on energy sources, production, and consumption; government energy policies; the relationship between the energy matrix and the environment; and their geopolitical implications.

  3. Data analysis: After collecting their data, students should analyze the information and draw comparisons between the three countries. This analysis should involve Math, as they should compare the proportions of energy sources and how they have changed over time, for example.

  4. Report preparation: Based on the research and data analysis, students should write a report detailing their findings. The report should follow the structure: Introduction, Development (with a description of the research and data analysis process), Conclusions, and Bibliography.

  5. Visual presentation preparation: In parallel with writing the report, students should prepare a visual presentation that clearly and engagingly represents their findings. The presentation should include graphs or other visual elements to illustrate the main points of the research.

Project Deliverables

At the end of the project, each group must submit:

  • A detailed written report, including the research methodology, data analysis, conclusions, and bibliography used.
  • A visual presentation that summarizes the research and the main findings of the report.

Students should consider the connection between the practical activity and the writing of the report. The written document should reflect the research and analysis process in a detailed and accurate manner. The appropriate academic language should be used, and the proposed structure: Introduction, Development (with a description of the research and data analysis process), Conclusions, and Bibliography.

Students should be encouraged to think critically about their findings and formulate their own conclusions based on their research and analysis. The main objective is for students to acquire a deeper understanding of energy matrices, their geopolitical and environmental implications, as well as to strengthen socioemotional skills such as teamwork, time management, and critical thinking.
