Asia and Europe: Territorial Conflicts

Contextualization

Asia and Europe are home to some of the oldest civilizations on Earth, whose rich tapestry of cultures and intricate histories have given rise to a variety of territorial and geopolitical conflicts. From the controversy of the Kuril Islands between Russia and Japan, through the historical tensions between India and Pakistan over the Kashmir region, to the complex disputes in the South China Sea, and the tensions in the Crimean Peninsula between Russia and Ukraine, these regions offer an abundant perspective to understand the multifaceted nature of territorial conflicts.

These territorial conflicts, although unique in their specific contexts, share common themes that go beyond land disputes. They also involve issues related to natural resources, national security, cultural identity, and national pride, among others. Studying these conflicts allows for a deep understanding of the global geopolitical landscape, the exercise of sovereignty, and the impact of political decisions on the lives of those affected by these conflicts.

This project will investigate some of these territorial conflicts in Asia and Europe, seeking to unravel their origins, developments, and implications. Through this study, students will be able to understand the complexity of international relations, as well as the role that geography plays in shaping policies and strategies at a global level.

By working on this project, students will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in a current issue, actively engaging in the research and discussion of topics that are of great relevance to the world today. Additionally, they will also develop important socio-emotional skills, such as time management, communication, problem-solving, creative thinking, and proactivity.

Below are some reliable sources that can be used as a starting point for research:

  1. BBC News - "Asia" and "Europe"
  2. National Geographic - "Asia" and "Europe"
  3. International Relations - "Asia" and "Europe"

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Playing and Learning about Territorial Conflicts

Project Objective

This project aims to analyze a specific territorial conflict in Asia or Europe, using research methods and presenting the results in an educational and engaging way through the creation of a board game.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each group will choose a specific territorial conflict from Asia or Europe to study. The students will have to conduct research on the chosen conflict, exploring its origins, developments, and implications.

Once the research is done, the students will design a board game based on the territorial conflict they chose. The game should be designed in such a way that, by playing it, the players learn about the complexities of the conflict, including the parties involved, what is at stake, the main events that occurred, and possible solutions.

Required Materials

  1. Cardboard or Cardboard to create the game board
  2. Cards or pieces of paper to create the game cards
  3. Pencils, colored pens, markers, etc.
  4. Internet or books for research
  5. Computer to write and format the project report
  6. Any other artistic material that students want to use to adorn their game

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Each group chooses a specific territorial conflict in Asia or Europe to research.
  2. Students conduct their research, focusing on the parties involved, the issues at stake, the timeline of major events, and possible solutions to the conflict.
  3. Students begin to design their board game. They should think about how to represent the conflict, the main events, and possible solutions in an educational and engaging way.
  4. Once the game is complete, students will play each other to ensure that the game is educational and fun.
  5. Students prepare a detailed project report, documenting the research process and the creation of the game.

Project Deliverables

The final result of the project consists of two parts:

  1. The Board Game: It must clearly represent the chosen territorial conflict, be educational and engaging. It should include clear instructions on how to play.

  2. The Project Report: It should be structured as an academic report, containing the following elements:

    • Introduction: Contextualization of the chosen territorial conflict, why it was chosen, and the project's objective.

    • Development: Details of the research conducted, including the sources used, the main learnings, the methodology adopted, and the detailed description of the game created, explaining how it represents and teaches about the territorial conflict.

    • Conclusions: Recap of the main points, explaining the learnings obtained, the conclusions drawn about the territorial conflict and the project in general, and the impact of the project on the participants' learning and understanding of territorial conflicts in Asia and Europe.

    • Bibliography: The complete references of all sources used for the project.

Students must ensure that their board game and report are complementary. For example, if a significant event is mentioned in the report, it should be somehow represented or included in the game. Similarly, the elements of the game should be traceable back to the research conducted, as evidenced in the report.
