The term 'Arab Spring' refers to a series of popular uprisings and revolutions that erupted in many Arab countries in early 2011. The movement involved peaceful and also violent protests, revolts, and sometimes civil wars.

These movements originated with the hope that political change could lead to social justice, freedom, and democracy. The Arab Spring is an important global event that demonstrates the power of the people to demand change and the struggle for democracy.

In our study, we will understand the main causes and outcomes of these protests and revolutions, discussing topics such as the issue of borders, tensions and conflicts in the Middle East and North Africa, as well as the implications for global integration.

Importance of the Topic

The Arab Spring is a milestone in contemporary history that has changed the geopolitical landscape of a region previously dominated by authoritarian regimes. Through the study of this phenomenon, we can understand the territorial transformations, the multiplicity of regionalities, and the impact of protests in the context of globalization and globalism.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Simulating the Arab Spring: An Immersion in Geopolitics and Economics

Project Objective:

To understand the causes and consequences of the Arab Spring by relating social, political, and economic facts in a historical and geographical context. Additionally, to develop research skills, critical analysis, teamwork, time management, and communication.

Detailed Project Description:

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 participants, and each group will represent a country involved in the Arab Spring (Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Syria, Bahrain, etc). Each group will analyze the situation of their respective country before, during, and after the Arab Spring.

The project includes:

1. Historical Research: Understanding the country's historical context, including the formation of its borders, its political-economic structure before the protests, and the relationship of this country with globalization.

2. Event Analysis: Detailed description of the protests, the demands of the protesters, the government's response, and the conflicts that followed.

3. Consequences and Current State of the Country: Analysis of the changes that occurred in the country after the protests (political, social, economic, etc) and the current situation of the country.

The groups will also organize a panel discussion where they will present their findings and discussions.

• Paper, pencil, or pen for notes;

5. Preparation of an oral presentation on the findings and discussions;
6. Conducting the panel discussion.

At the end of the project, the groups must deliver:

   • Introduction: Contextualization of the Arab Spring, the chosen country, and the relevance of the study.
   • Development: Detailing the research conducted, methodology adopted, analysis of the facts, and discussion of the results obtained.
   • Conclusion: Recap of the main points of the work, lessons learned, and conclusions drawn from the project.

2. Oral presentation on the findings and discussions during the panel discussion.

The oral presentation and the written report should be interconnected, so that the written report provides the theoretical support for the oral presentation, and the oral presentation is a synthesized and dynamic representation of the work done.
