Terrorism

Context

Terrorism is a complex and multifaceted phenomenon that has disturbed world peace and challenged security. It is a topic that permeates geopolitical, strategic, and security discussions, amplifying the importance of its study. To understand terrorism, it is essential to take a look at its history, the motivations behind terrorist acts, the main terrorist groups, and the response of states and international organizations.

Modern terrorism has its roots in different parts of the world, arising from various sources of conflict, including territorial disputes, revolutions, nationalism, and ethnic and religious conflicts. The study of terrorism, therefore, is a study of the nature of human conflicts and how these conflicts can lead to acts of violence outside the accepted norms of war and conflict.

Terrorism, in its various forms, has a profound influence on the world today. Recent events show the impact of terrorism on people's daily lives, influencing politics, the economy, and, most importantly, human lives. Furthermore, the fight against terrorism has also shaped how nations deal with their internal and external securities.

To deepen your knowledge on the subject, we suggest the following readings:

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Creating an Interactive Timeline of Terrorism

Project Objective:

This project aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of terrorism through the investigation of key events, causes, and consequences. Teamwork is essential for the development of this project, reinforcing the importance of collaboration and effective communication.

Detailed Project Description:

Groups of students (3 to 5) should create an interactive timeline of the most relevant global terrorism events from 1960 to the present. The timeline should include detailed descriptions of the selected events, the terrorist groups involved, the causes, consequences, and the responses of governments and international organizations.

The interactive timeline should be presented digitally, allowing users to click on each event to obtain more details and information. Events should be presented in chronological order to facilitate understanding.

Required Materials:

  • Computer with internet access
  • Online tool for creating interactive timelines (such as Padlet, TimeGraphics, or similar)
  • Notebooks or notes to record processes and discoveries

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:

  1. Form groups of 3 to 5 students. Once the groups are formed, each student should choose a time period to research.

  2. Each student, within their group, conducts research on the main terrorist events of the chosen period, including the groups involved, causes, consequences, and responses from governments and international organizations.

  3. Students should gather to share their findings and discuss commonalities and differences in the various periods.

  4. Using timeline creation tools, students should then build their interactive timeline. Each event should be detailed carefully, and the timeline should be organized in chronological order.

  5. Once the interactive timeline is completed, the group should meet to review and verify that all events have been adequately presented and described.

Upon completion of the project, each group will present their interactive timeline to the class, allowing all students to learn from each group's work.

Project Deliverables:

After completing the practical part of the project, students should prepare a written report in the format of a Google Docs document with the following topics:

  • Introduction: Students should contextualize the theme of terrorism, its relevance and real-world application, as well as the purpose of this project.

  • Development: Students should explain the theory behind the central theme(s) of the project, detail the activity, indicate the methodology used, and finally, present and discuss the results obtained.

  • Conclusion: Students should conclude the work by summarizing their main points, explaining the learnings obtained, and drawing conclusions about the project.

  • Bibliography: Students should indicate the sources they relied on to work on the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

This report should be emailed to the teacher before the agreed-upon deadline.
