This project is about 'Graphics Evaluation'. Graphics are an excellent visual tool that help understand data distribution, patterns, trends, and relationships between variables. They are widely used in almost every field, from science and engineering to business and finance.

Theoretical Introduction

Graphics are two-dimensional representations of data. They are derived from a numerical table and visually convey a concrete idea of the data set. There are many different types of graphics, such as bar charts, line charts, pie charts, etc. Each type of graphic is suitable for a particular type of data, and choosing the right type of graphic is crucial for correctly conveying the idea.

Bar charts are useful for comparing relative quantities. Each bar shows a specific quantity, and all bars are arranged side by side for easy comparison. Line charts show the variation of one quantity with another. This type of chart is common in finance and science to show a trend. Pie charts, on the other hand, show proportions. Each slice of the pie chart represents a proportion of the whole.

Contextualization

In our daily lives, we use graphics to understand and interpret data. They are present in weather forecasts, sports statistics, news, and financial reports. Understanding how graphics are created and how to interpret them is a valuable skill.

In the business world, graphics are a powerful tool to present information more clearly and concisely. They can help highlight trends, compare data, understand data distribution and variation, and much more. Therefore, mastering graphic evaluation is an essential skill that can help you succeed in a wide range of careers.

Practical Activity: 'Graphics in Practice' Project

Project Objective

  1. Provide students with practical experience in creating, interpreting, and evaluating graphics.
  2. Develop research skills, data analysis, and presentation skills.
  3. Foster collaboration, communication, and time management among students.

Detailed Project Description

The project will involve research, data collection, graphic creation, analysis, and presentation of results.

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each group will have to choose a real-world topic (e.g., world population, sports, weather, economy, science, among others) and formulate a research question related to this topic that can be answered with the help of graphics.

The groups will have to research relevant data for their research question, using a variety of sources. After that, they will have to organize the data, create relevant graphics, and interpret the results.

Each group will have to present their results in an oral presentation, including the created graphics and a description of how the graphics help answer the research question.

Additionally, each group will have to prepare a detailed written report of the project, which will include sections of Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.

Required Materials

  • Internet access for research
  • Computer with spreadsheet software (Excel, Google Sheets) for graphic creation

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Formation of groups and choice of research topic.
  2. Formulation of the research question related to the chosen topic.
  3. Research and collection of relevant data to answer the research question.
  4. Organization of collected data and preliminary analysis.
  5. Creation of graphics representing the collected data.
  6. Interpretation of the graphics and evaluation of how they answer the research question.
  7. Preparation of the oral presentation.
  8. Oral presentation of the project, including the created graphics and an explanation of how they answer the research question.
  9. Writing the written report of the project, including sections of Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.

Project Deliverables

Groups must deliver the following items at the end of the project:

  1. Oral presentation, including the created graphics and an explanation of how they answer the research question. This will allow students to develop their public speaking skills and data presentation.

  2. Written report of the project, detailing the entire process the group went through, from choosing the topic to the final interpretation of the graphics. The report should have the following sections:

    • Introduction: Explanation of the chosen topic, the research question, and its relevance in the real world.

    • Development: Description of the research methodology, data collection, graphic creation, and analysis of results. Detailing all created graphics and justifying the choice of each type of graphic.

    • Conclusions: Critical evaluation of the graphics and interpretation of results. Highlighting what the graphics reveal about the research question and the implications of these results.

    • Bibliography: List of all sources used during the research.

Students will apply what they have learned about graphics, measures of central tendency and range, appropriate tables and graphics, and critically evaluate their own graphics and results to enhance their technical skills. They will also have the opportunity to develop socio-emotional skills, such as time management, communication, problem-solving, creative thinking, and proactivity.
