Context

Units of measurement are essential for us to understand the world around us. They allow us to quantify elements such as time, distance, mass, temperature, and many others in a standardized way, enabling communication and comparison of these quantities among people from different places and cultures.

The study of units of measurement in Mathematics is linked to various fields of science such as Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, being essential for the understanding of natural phenomena, technological and scientific development, and even for everyday processes, such as buying food at the supermarket or measuring time.

Introduction

In ancient civilizations, units of measurement were based on bodily references, such as 'feet,' 'fathoms,' 'handbreadth,' among others. Over time, these units were standardized more precisely, giving rise to the decimal metric system, which is the most widely used in the world.

However, not all units of measurement are the same. There is a set of units called 'base units' that can be combined to form other 'derived units.' For example, the meter is a base unit for measuring length, and the second is a base unit for measuring time. When we combine these two units, we have meters per second, a derived unit used to measure speed.

It is important to note that there are units of measurement to express very large or very small quantities. For example, the distance between planets and solar systems (light-years), the size of viruses or cells (nanometers), the storage capacity of computers (gigabytes, terabytes), among others. Understanding these units and knowing how to convert them is a crucial skill in Mathematics.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Measurement in the World: Unveiling Large and Small Quantities

Project Objective:

Students should understand the importance and use of units of measurement to express very large or very small quantities, relating them to real-world events. They should also develop teamwork, communication skills, problem-solving, and creative thinking.

Project Description:

Students will be divided into groups of three to five people and will be tasked with researching, gathering, and presenting information on a topic that involves the need to express very large or very small quantities. Topics can range from distances in the cosmos, microscopic dimensions, or even gigabytes and terabytes of data.

After conducting research, each group should develop an explanatory presentation containing data, images, and a visual model to help explain the measurement scales used in their chosen topic. In addition, students should provide an example of converting these units of measurement, explaining the methodology used.

Required Materials:

  • Computer with internet access for research
  • Paper and pencil for notes
  • Materials for building the visual model (cardboard, markers, glue, etc.)

Step-by-Step:

  1. Form groups of 3 to 5 students.

  2. Choose a topic that involves very large or very small measurements.

  3. Research information about the chosen topic, especially the units of measurement involved and how they are used.

  4. Develop an example of converting units of measurement used in the researched topic.

  5. Plan and create a visual model that aids in explaining the measurement scales used in your theme.

  6. Prepare a presentation for the class that explains your topic, the units of measurement involved, shows the visual model, and explains the example of unit conversion.

Project Deliverables:

In addition to the presentation, each group must submit a written report on the project, organized into the following sections:

Introduction:

Provide context for the theme, explain its relevance and real-world application, as well as the objective of this project.

Development:

Explain the theory behind the units of measurement used in the topic, detail the activity carried out, indicate the methodology used for unit conversion, and discuss the results obtained.

Conclusion:

Conclude the work by summarizing its main points, highlighting the learnings obtained, and drawing conclusions about the project.

Bibliography:

Indicate the sources you relied on to work on the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

Project Duration: The activity should take two to four hours per student to complete, and the deadline for submission is one week.
