Contextualization

Mathematics is a fundamental science for our daily lives and has applications in various other disciplines. Among the many concepts belonging to it, volume stands out for being a very relevant and widely used theme. Volume is the measure of the space occupied by an object or the amount of space that an object contains. When dealing with 3D objects in real life, such as a shoebox or a concrete block, we are dealing with the concept of volume.

However, when we add fractions to the mix, the situation can become more complex. Fractions are numbers that represent parts of a whole. They are essential in solving day-to-day problems, since we rarely deal with perfect whole numbers in real life. For example, you may not want to drink a whole glass of juice, but only half.

These representations of partial quantities are essential for understanding various mathematical and scientific concepts. Therefore, a complete understanding of the concepts of volume and fractions and how they interact is crucial for mastering mathematics and its practical applications.

Theoretical Introduction

Volume, in mathematics, is the amount of space that a three-dimensional object occupies, which is measured in cubic units (for example, cubic meters, cubic centimeters, etc.). We can calculate the volume of various types of solids, such as prisms, cylinders, cones, pyramids, and spheres, each with its own specific formula.

In this project, we will focus on calculating the volume of cubes and prisms. For a cube, the volume is calculated by raising the length of one side to the cube (side x side x side). For a prism, the volume is calculated by multiplying the area of the base by the height of the prism (Base x Height).

Fractions, on the other hand, are used to represent quantities smaller than a whole. A fraction consists of a numerator (the top number) and a denominator (the bottom number). The numerator indicates how many parts we have, and the denominator indicates how many equal parts make up a whole. Therefore, when dealing with volumes that have fractional measurements, we need to be comfortable working with fractions and their calculations.

"Building with Fractions: Discovering the volume of cubes and prisms"

Project Objective

In this activity, students will enhance their knowledge of volume and fractions by creating small models of houses and buildings using fraction blocks.

This activity aims to:

  1. Apply the concept of volume to the calculation of three-dimensional volumes in real-world situations.
  2. Handle and manipulate fractions to solve volume problems.
  3. Develop socio-emotional skills such as time management, cooperation, problem-solving, and critical thinking.

Detailed Project Description

Students should be divided into groups of 3 to 5 students, and each group will be challenged to build a model of a building or house using fraction building blocks. Each block represents a fraction (½, ⅓, ¼, for example) of the total volume of the building or house.

Students should calculate the total volume of the building or house model and each fractional part, representing the rooms of the building or house, providing detail on the calculation for each room.

The intention is for students to explore different scenarios involving volume calculations with fractions, learning to deal with these concepts in a playful and cooperative environment.

Required Materials

  • Building blocks of different sizes, representing different fractions of the total volume of the building or house.
  • Graph paper, to draw the floor plan (top view) of the building or house.
  • Colored pencils or pens, to distinguish the different parts (rooms) of the building or house in the floor plan drawing.
  • Ruler or tape measure, for precise measurement of blocks and rooms.
  • Calculator, to assist in volume calculations.

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Students should plan the construction of their building or house model. In this step, they should draw a floor plan of the model on graph paper, highlighting the different rooms and their respective fractions of the total volume. Each group should have the freedom to design their own model, as long as it includes different rooms with fractional volumes.
  2. Based on the floor plan drawing, students should build the model using the building blocks. Each block represents a fraction of the total volume of the building or house, and therefore, the different rooms of the building or house should be built with the blocks corresponding to the planned fractions.
  3. After building the model, students should measure the volume of each room and calculate the total volume of the building or house. They should record their calculations and results.
  4. Finally, students should write a report on the project, following the suggested report format, which includes Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.

The written report should include:

  1. Introduction: A brief description of the project, its objectives, and its relevance to real life.
  2. Development: A detailed description of the model construction, including the floor plan drawing and the decision on the fractions used for each room. In addition, students should explain how they calculated the volume of each room and the total volume of the building or house.
  3. Conclusions: What they learned from the project, problems faced, how they were solved, and what they took away about the concept of fractional volume.
  4. Bibliography: References and resources used to learn and apply the concepts of volume and fraction in the project.
