Contextualization

Probability is a fundamental tool used in many fields, including mathematics, statistics, physics, engineering, computer science, finance, among others. It helps us predict what to expect in an experiment or a series of experiments.

In probability, an event is any combination of possible outcomes. For example, if we flip a coin, there are two possible outcomes: heads or tails. Each of these is considered an event. Independent events are those in which the occurrence of one event does not affect the probability of the other event occurring. On the other hand, in dependent events, the occurrence of one event affects the probability of the other event occurring.

Dependent events are extremely common in everyday life. Imagine you have a deck of cards. If you draw a card and do not replace it, the probability of the cards you draw next will be affected by the fact that you have already drawn a card. This is a perfect example of dependent events.

By understanding these concepts and learning how to calculate these probabilities, you will gain important skills that will be useful in a variety of fields and help you make informed decisions.

Introduction

In our project, we will explore the idea of dependent events in a fun and engaging way. We will use a deck of cards to simulate how dependent events work and calculate the probability of certain outcomes.

Events are all around us. They occur all the time, and therefore, probability is an extraordinarily useful tool. It allows us to make decisions and predictions based on data. Understanding the probability of dependent events is especially important for jobs involving forecasts or estimates.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: The Probability of Poker

Project Objective

This project was designed to help students understand and apply probability concepts, specifically focused on dependent events, through a practical activity involving card games.

Detailed Project Description

Groups of 3 to 5 students will simulate and analyze poker games to understand how the outcome of one event (for example, the first card you draw) can affect the outcome of subsequent events (for example, the next cards you draw). Students will calculate the probability of different poker hands and see how these probabilities change as cards are drawn and each player's 'hand' develops.

Required Materials

  • Deck of cards
  • Pencils and paper for notes
  • Calculator

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Theory Review: Students should review the topic in the provided resources before starting the practical activity. It is important that all group members understand the concept of dependent events before beginning the project.

  2. Group Formation: Form groups of 3 to 5 students.

  3. Card Distribution and Initial Play: Each group should shuffle a deck of cards, and each group member should draw five cards to form an initial 'hand'.

  4. Initial Analysis: Each student should then analyze their initial hand. They should discuss and note down the different poker combinations they could form with the hand they have and calculate the probability of each of these combinations.

  5. Ongoing Play and Analysis: Next, each student should draw a card from the deck and discard a card from their hand. They should recalculate the probability of their possible poker combinations after each new card. They should continue doing this until they have drawn all the cards from the deck.

  6. Report: Each group should write a detailed report of their findings. The report should include the following sections: Introduction, Development (including theory, methodology, activity, and results), Conclusions, and Bibliography.

Project Deliverables

All groups need to deliver a well-structured report with at least 4 sections: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.

  • In the Introduction, students should contextualize the topic and their interest in it. They should also mention the relevance of probability and dependent events in the real world and the reason behind choosing poker to understand the concept.

  • The Development section should contain the theory behind dependent events and how they relate to the game of poker. Students should detail the methodology they used, including the steps of the practical activity they carried out. They should also present and discuss the results they obtained, including the probabilities of the different poker combinations they calculated.

  • In the Conclusions section, students should reflect on what they learned from the project. They should connect their experiences with the theory they learned and explain how their perceptions of probability and dependent events changed as a result of the project.

  • Finally, the Bibliography should list all the sources students used to learn about the topic and carry out the project.

It is expected that by completing the project, students will have a solid understanding of how dependent events work and how to calculate their probability. Additionally, students are expected to improve their time management, communication, problem-solving, and creative thinking skills.
