Waves: Introduction

Contextualization

In our daily lives, we are constantly surrounded by waves. Whether it's the sound of music, the waves of the sea, or the radio waves that allow long-distance communication, they are present in our daily lives and play fundamental roles in our society. But what are waves? How do they work? And why are they so important?

Waves are disturbances that propagate in space or in some medium. They carry energy from one place to another without carrying matter. Different types of waves can be classified as mechanical (such as sound or ocean waves) or electromagnetic (such as radio waves or light). Furthermore, they can be transverse (when particles move perpendicular to the direction of propagation) or longitudinal (when particles move parallel to the direction of propagation).

Relevance of Waves

Waves are an integral part of various technologies we use in everyday life. The light that illuminates our homes, the devices we use to communicate, the radio, and television, all depend on the concept of waves to function. The study of waves is therefore crucial to advance our understanding and technological skills.

Moreover, waves have significant applications in the field of medicine. For example, sound waves are used in ultrasounds to create images of internal organs, while electromagnetic waves are used in X-ray exams. Understanding how waves work allows us to understand and improve these technologies.

Practical Activity: Construction of an FM Radio

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to build a simple FM radio using basic materials and, at the same time, understand how electromagnetic waves (radio waves) work and can be used to transmit information. Students will work in groups of 3 to 5, and the project will last approximately 15 hours.

Detailed Project Description

In the first part of the project, students should research radio waves, how they work, and how a simple FM radio operates. They should prepare a simple presentation to share their findings with the class before starting the radio construction.

In the second part, students will build an FM radio. At this stage, they should learn about the importance of the circuit, capacitance, induction, diode, and antenna in radio construction.

Finally, students should write a report detailing the construction process, explaining each component used and how they contributed to the radio's operation.

Required Materials

  • Enamel copper wire (24 to 28 gauge)
  • PVC pipe (about 2.5 cm in diameter)
  • Connection wire
  • Variable capacitor
  • Germanium diode (1N34)
  • High impedance earphone
  • Screwdriver, pliers, and scissors

Step by Step

  1. Wind the enamel copper wire around the PVC pipe to create a coil. Leave about 15 cm of loose wire at each end.
  2. Connect one terminal of the variable capacitor to one of the loose ends of the coil.
  3. Connect the other end of the capacitor to the anode (larger terminal) of the diode.
  4. Connect the cathode (smaller terminal) of the diode to the earphones.
  5. Connect the other loose end of the coil to the earphones.
  6. Arrange the wires and components on a wooden or cardboard base for easy handling.

Project Deliverables

Students must deliver the initial presentation on radio waves and radio operation, the built FM radio, and a detailed report on the project.

The report should include:

  1. Introduction: Describing what waves are, particularly radio waves, and how an FM radio operates.
  2. Development: Detailing the radio construction process, including the function of each component (coil, diode, variable capacitor, and earphones).
  3. Conclusions: Summarizing the main learning points, the problems encountered and how they were solved, and final observations on the project.
  4. Bibliography: Listing the sources of information used for research and project implementation.

Students must present the built radio to the class and demonstrate its operation. They should also explain the construction process and the radio's operation during the presentation.
