Adverbial Subordinate Clause

Contextualization

The universe of the Portuguese language is incredibly vast and complex, and one of the concepts that contributes to this complexity is that of subordinate adverbial clauses. It is a structure that allows us to express relationships of cause, consequence, condition, time, among others, within the same sentence. This adds dynamism and richness to our discourse, whether oral or written.

Subordinate adverbial clauses are sentences that function as an adverbial adjunct to another sentence, to which they are linked thanks to the use of conjunctions and conjunctive phrases. Identifying and using them correctly in texts will be our challenge in this project, where we will try to apply theory and practice to understand their role and importance in communication.

Introduction

The Portuguese language is the tool we use to communicate our thoughts, feelings, and ideas. It is the raw material for any form of written or verbal expression, and therefore, its mastery is essential for us to understand and interpret the world around us. Within this domain, the correct use of subordinate adverbial clauses is fundamental for us to express ourselves clearly and efficiently.

These clauses can be classified into 10 types, according to the circumstance they express: cause, consequence, condition, concession, comparison, conformity, purpose, proportion, time, and place. Throughout this project, we will explore each of these types, practicing through exercises and developing our proficiency in using these structures.

The following resources can be used to delve deeper into the topic:

  1. Só Português - Subordinate Adverbial Clauses
  2. Brasil Escola - Subordinate Adverbial Clauses
  3. Gramática Net - Subordinate Adverbial Clauses

Practical Activity: "Construction of Scenarios through Subordinate Adverbial Clauses"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to enhance the use of subordinate adverbial clauses in the practice of writing, in a playful and collaborative way, through the construction of fictional scenarios. The narratives will be developed by groups of 3 to 5 students and require the application of different types of subordinate adverbial clauses.

Detailed Project Description

Each group will choose a literary genre (science fiction, fantasy, mystery, romance, etc.) and create a plot set in a fictional universe. The plot must be filled with situations that explore the ten types of subordinate adverbial clauses mentioned.

Students will also need to draw maps and create detailed characters that make up the fictional universe — an interdisciplinary activity involving Art and Portuguese. A detailed description with illustrations of the universe, characters, and events of the plot will be the deliverables.

Required Materials

  • Books and online resources for research
  • Drawing and painting materials
  • Paper
  • Computer for preparing the report

Step-by-Step for Carrying Out the Activity

  1. Selection of Literary Genre: Each group chooses a genre for their narrative.
  2. Research: Students conduct research to obtain detailed information about their chosen literary genre and about subordinate adverbial clauses.
  3. Creation of the Fictional Universe: The group creates a detailed fictional universe for the setting of their plot.
  4. Creation of Characters: The group creates characters who live in this universe.
  5. Plot Creation: The group develops a story that takes place in this universe, ensuring that the plot involves situations requiring the use of subordinate adverbial clauses of all types.
  6. Drawing Maps and Characters: The group illustrates the fictional universe and its characters.
  7. Writing the Story: The group writes the story, ensuring the correct use of subordinate adverbial clauses.
  8. Revision and Editing: The group revises the work, looking for errors and opportunities to improve the plot and grammar.
  9. Preparing the Report: The group prepares a report, following the criteria listed below.

Each stage should take about two hours per participating student.

Project Deliverables and Report Preparation

At the end of the project, students must deliver:

  1. Written Report: Students must write a report that will contain an introduction (description of the chosen literary genre and the relevance of subordinate adverbial clauses), development (the methodology used in the construction of the literary scenario, characters, and plot, as well as an explanation of the subordinate adverbial clauses concepts used in the plot), conclusion (the learnings acquired and the conclusions drawn about the project), and bibliography (sources used for research and work production).

  2. Fictional Universe: A detailed description of the created fictional universe, along with illustrations of the landscape, maps, and infrastructure.

  3. Characters: Detailed descriptions of the main characters, including their physical characteristics, personality, and role in the plot. Each description must be accompanied by a drawn portrait of the character.

  4. Plot: The story that takes place in this universe, including a beginning, middle, and end. The story must be written according to the standard norm and contain complex syntactic structures at the clause and sentence level, with special attention to the correct use of subordinate adverbial clauses.

The deliverables should be presented in an organized manner, demonstrating the collective effort of the group and the application of the concepts learned during the project.
