Simone de Beauvoir, in her book The Coming of Age, states that the way a society treats its elderly reveals what it truly believes in. In Brazil, this revelation is uncomfortable. The 1988 Constitution guarantees, in article 230, the duty of family, society, and the State to support the elderly, but the country is aging without being prepared. This happens due to a lack of public care policies and age prejudice, which has become a habit. Firstly, the exaggerated valorization of productivity pushes the elderly out of social life. Sociologist Zygmunt Bauman explains that consumer society discards those who do not produce or buy at the pace the market demands, and this is precisely what happens to those who retire in the country. Such a mindset appears in concrete situations: résumés rejected because of age, elderly people treated like children within their own homes, and the repeated idea that aging means becoming obsolete. As long as it continues, the Statute of the Elderly Person will remain only on paper. Furthermore, the absence of a public care network imposes on families, and especially on women, a task that should be shared with the State. Geographer Milton Santos, in The Citizen's Space, calls this incomplete citizenship: the right exists in law, but it does not reach people's lives. In this sense, broken sidewalks, inaccessible buses, and the lack of geriatricians in the public health system show that the city is still designed for the young. There have been legal advances in recent decades, but they have not been accompanied by a structure capable of assisting the elderly in their daily lives. Given this, it is necessary for the federal government to take measures to expand care for the elderly population, in order to ensure a dignified old age nationwide. The Ministry of Education, in turn, should promote intergenerational projects in schools, with the aim of combating age prejudice from an early age. Thus, old age ceases to be the age of invisibility and becomes, as Beauvoir wished, the mirror of a just society, where lived time, instead of being a burden, is valued.
