Change in Life in the Countryside and the City

Lesson Plan | Active Learning | Change in Life in the Countryside and the City

KeywordsTechnology, Life in the countryside, Life in the city, Comparison, Mind map, Debate, Practical projects, Technological impact, Differences and similarities, Collaborative activities, Critical thinking, Elementary education
Required MaterialsPaper, Colored pens, Mind map template, Projector (optional)

Assumptions: This Active Lesson Plan assumes: a 100-minute class, prior student study with both the Book and the start of Project development, and that only one activity (among the three suggested) will be chosen to be conducted during the class, as each activity is designed to take up a significant portion of the available time.

Objectives

Duration: (5 - 10 minutes)

This stage of the lesson plan is crucial for clearly establishing the learning objectives, guiding subsequent activities to achieve the proposed goals. By specifically defining what is expected for students to learn, the teacher can guide discussions and activities more effectively, ensuring that the focus is always on the key aspects of the influence of technology on urban and rural life.

Main Objectives:

1. Empower students to differentiate between work and life in the city and in the countryside, highlighting the influences of technology on people's daily lives.

2. Develop the ability to compare the changes brought about by technology in urban and rural daily activities.

Side Objectives:

  1. Stimulate students' curiosity and critical thinking about how technology affects different aspects of daily life.

Introduction

Duration: (20 - 25 minutes)

The introduction serves to engage students with the content they have pre-studied, using problem situations that make them think critically about the application of technology in real life. In addition, the contextualization helps to connect the content with real situations, increasing students' interest and understanding of how technology shapes daily activities in the city and in the countryside.

Problem-Based Situations

1. Imagine you live on a small farm in the countryside and rely on technology to monitor crops and take care of animals. How do you think your life would be different if you didn't have access to this technology?

2. Think of a big city like São Paulo. Many people use apps to get around and communicate. If these apps stopped working for a day, how do you think that would affect people's lives in the city?

Contextualization

Technology has profoundly transformed life in cities and in the countryside. For example, modern tractors and harvesters have revolutionized agriculture, allowing one person to cultivate much more land than in the past. In cities, the use of apps like Uber and WhatsApp has changed the way people get around and communicate. These examples show how technology directly influences daily activities and social organization in both areas.

Development

Duration: (65 - 75 minutes)

The development stage is designed to allow students to apply and deepen the knowledge acquired about the influence of technology in urban and rural life. Through playful and collaborative activities, students can creatively explore the dynamics between technology and society, developing analytical, communication, and critical skills. At the end of this stage, it is expected that students will have a richer and more contextualized understanding of technological changes and their implications in urban and rural environments.

Activity Suggestions

It is recommended to carry out only one of the suggested activities

Activity 1 - Technology Detectives: Urban and Rural

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Analyze and compare the impact of technologies on rural and urban life.

- Description: In this activity, students will be divided into groups of up to five people, and each group will be challenged to investigate how technology influences both life in the countryside and in the city. They will create a mind map illustrating the technologies that are essential in each environment and discuss their functions and impacts.

- Instructions:

  • Form groups of up to five students.

  • Distribute materials such as paper, colored pens, and a mind map template to each group.

  • Ask each group to list the main technologies used in the countryside and in the city.

  • Encourage students to discuss in their groups how these technologies have changed the way of working and living in rural and urban areas.

  • Each group must complete the mind map, connecting the listed technologies with their functions and impacts.

  • At the end, each group will present their mind map to the class, explaining the chosen technologies and the reasons for their importance.

Activity 2 - Builders of Digital Cities and Farms

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Promote creativity and planning for the use of technologies in rural and urban environments.

- Description: Students, organized in groups, will be tasked with planning and drawing, on paper, an ideal city and an ideal farm, considering the use of modern technologies. They must think about how technology can be implemented to improve quality of life and productivity in both environments.

- Instructions:

  • Divide the class into groups of up to five students.

  • Explain that each group must draw on paper a city and a farm, considering the use of modern technologies.

  • Students should discuss and plan which technologies are most suitable for each environment, such as drones in agriculture and security systems in cities.

  • Encourage students to be creative and think of innovative solutions.

  • Each group will present their project to the class, explaining the chosen technologies and how they improve life and work in their environments.

Activity 3 - The Great Debate: Technology in the Countryside vs. Technology in the City

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Develop argumentation skills and critical understanding of the use of technology in different environments.

- Description: This activity involves a debate among students, where half of the class will defend the use of technology in the countryside and the other half in the city. They will need to prepare arguments and counterarguments about how technology positively and negatively affects each environment.

- Instructions:

  • Divide the class into two groups: one group will defend the use of technology in the countryside and the other in the city.

  • Each group will have time to prepare their arguments, considering the positive and negative impacts of technology in their designated environment.

  • Conduct the debate, allowing each side to present their viewpoints, followed by opportunities to rebut the opposing group's arguments.

  • At the end of the debate, students will vote on the group that presented the most convincing arguments.

Feedback

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

This feedback stage is designed to consolidate learning and allow students to articulate the knowledge gained during the practical activities. The group discussion helps develop communication and argumentation skills, as well as providing an opportunity for students to critically reflect on how technology shapes different aspects of urban and rural life. This moment also serves for the teacher to assess students' understanding and clarify any remaining doubts.

Group Discussion

After the practical activities are completed, gather all students for a group discussion. Start the discussion with a brief recap of the lesson objectives and explain that now is the time to share and reflect on what has been learned. Encourage each group to present a summary of the discoveries and conclusions reached during the activities. Use the following questions to guide the discussion: How does technology influence life in the countryside and the city in different ways? What are the main advantages and challenges of technological implementation in urban and rural environments?

Key Questions

1. What were the greatest differences you observed in the application of technology between the countryside and the city?

2. How can technology help improve the quality of life in the countryside and the city?

3. Was there any discovery that changed the way you thought about rural or urban technology?

Conclusion

Duration: (10 - 15 minutes)

The purpose of this conclusion stage is to ensure that students have a clear understanding of the content discussed and the activities carried out. By summarizing and recapping, the teacher reinforces learning, ensuring that students can connect theoretical information with practical experiences. Additionally, by highlighting the relevance of the theme to everyday life, students are motivated to become interested and continue reflecting on how technology shapes the world around them.

Summary

To conclude the lesson, the teacher should summarize the main topics discussed, reiterating how technology influences rural and urban life in distinct ways. The activities carried out, such as mind maps, city and farm projects, and the debate, should be recapped, highlighting the differences and similarities in the use of technology in the two environments.

Theory Connection

Today's lesson connected theory and practice by exploring how technology is applied and influences lifestyles in the countryside and the city. The practical activities allowed students to apply theoretical knowledge on the subject, highlighting not only the importance of technology but also the challenges and benefits it brings to these environments.

Closing

Finally, it is crucial to highlight the relevance of the theme in students' daily lives. Understanding the differences and similarities in the use of technology helps to form more conscious citizens about the technological and social changes around them. This knowledge is essential for them to participate actively in future transformations in their communities.
