Objectives

The purpose of this stage is to introduce students to the concept of comparing the areas of distinct objects using a visual approach. This will allow them to develop fundamental mathematical skills while enhancing socio-emotional competencies, such as self-awareness and responsible decision-making. Through recognizing and understanding the emotions involved in the learning process, students will be better prepared to face future challenges in a balanced and conscious manner.

1. Recognize and visually identify the area of different objects.

2. Compare and classify objects based on their areas, determining which have larger or smaller area.

Breathing Mindfulness

1. Ask students to sit comfortably, with their backs straight and feet firmly on the ground.

2. Explain that they should gently close their eyes or focus on a fixed point in the room.

3. Have them place one hand on their abdomen and the other on their chest to feel their breathing.

4. Begin the activity by asking students to breathe deeply through their noses, feeling their abdomen expand.

5. Ask them to hold their breath for three seconds and then exhale slowly through their mouths.

6. Guide them to pay attention only to their breathing, feeling the air entering and leaving their bodies. Repeat this deep breathing cycle for five minutes, encouraging concentration solely on the act of breathing.

7. After the set time, ask them to slowly open their eyes and return their attention to the room, maintaining calm and focus.

Content Contextualization

Comparing areas is a fundamental mathematical skill that we use in various everyday situations, such as choosing the most suitable space for an activity or deciding which packaging is more efficient for storing objects. Understanding how to measure and compare areas helps us make more informed and practical decisions. Additionally, by learning to compare areas, students also develop socio-emotional competencies such as self-awareness and responsible decision-making. They learn to recognize their emotions when facing mathematical challenges, understand the causes of their frustrations or joys, name these emotions correctly, express them appropriately, and finally regulate them to maintain an emotionally balanced state.

1. Definition of Area: Explain that area is the measurement of the surface of an object. Using simple examples such as a square or a rectangle, show that area can be calculated by multiplying width by height (for rectangular shapes).

2. Units of Measurement: Show different units of measurement that can be used to calculate area, such as square centimeters (cm²) and square meters (m²). Use everyday objects to illustrate these measurements.

3. Visual Comparison: Explain that in many cases, we can compare areas visually. Show two objects of different sizes and ask the students which appears to have the larger area.

4. Practical Examples: Provide practical examples of area comparison, such as comparing the area of two sheets of paper or the area of two different tables in the classroom.

5. Analogies: Use analogies to facilitate understanding, such as comparing the area of an object to the space it occupies on a chessboard or the number of tiles needed to cover a surface.

Socioemotional Feedback Activity

Duration: (30 - 35 minutes)

Area Comparison with Everyday Objects

Students will compare the areas of different everyday objects using both visual observation and measurement with rulers and paper squares. This activity aims not only to develop mathematical skills but also to reinforce socio-emotional competencies such as teamwork and communication.

1. Divide the students into groups of 3 to 4 people.

2. Distribute different everyday objects (books, notebooks, boxes, etc.) to each group.

3. Provide rulers and paper squares for the students to use in measuring the areas.

4. Ask students to start by visually comparing the areas of the objects and recording their observations.

5. Next, ask them to use the rulers and paper squares to measure the areas of the objects and compare with their visual observations.

6. Encourage the students to discuss their findings within the group, focusing on the differences between visual observations and actual measurements.

7. After the activity, ask each group to present their conclusions to the class.

Group Discussion

After completing the activity, promote a group discussion using the RULER method. Recognize the students' emotions by asking how they felt during the activity, whether they were confident or uncertain. Understand the causes of these emotions by discussing what was easy or difficult in the measurement and comparison process. Name the emotions correctly by identifying feelings such as frustration, joy, or surprise. Express emotions appropriately, encouraging students to share their experiences respectfully. Regulate emotions by discussing strategies for dealing with negative feelings and maintaining an emotionally balanced state during future activities.

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

Emotional Reflection and Regulation

📄 Activity: Ask students to write a paragraph reflecting on the challenges faced during the class. They should address how they felt when comparing the areas of the objects, what emotions they experienced, and how these emotions influenced their performance. Alternatively, lead a group discussion where each student can share their experiences and emotions openly and respectfully.
