Objectives

Duration: (10 - 15 minutes)

The purpose of this stage is to provide students with a clear understanding of the objectives of the lesson, preparing them for the exploration of the news textual genre. By clearly defining what is expected of them to learn, students can direct their attention and efforts towards developing specific skills related to understanding and producing news, which will also facilitate the development of socio-emotional competencies such as self-awareness and responsible decision-making.

Main Goals

1. Understand that a news article aims to inform the reader about a recent event or fact of social relevance.

2. Know the textual structure of a news article, identifying elements such as title, lead, body, and conclusion.

Introduction

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

Emotional Warm-up Activity

Deep Breathing for Focus and Concentration

Deep Breathing is a simple and effective technique that can help students focus and prepare emotionally for the lesson. It involves taking a deep breath in through the nose, filling the lungs with air, and then slowly exhaling through the mouth. This practice can reduce anxiety, improve attention, and promote a state of calm and presence.

1. Ask students to sit comfortably in their chairs, with their feet flat on the floor and their hands resting on their laps.

2. Explain that they will practice a breathing technique that will help calm their minds and focus on the lesson.

3. Instruct students to close their eyes if they feel comfortable, or to fix their gaze on a point ahead.

4. Ask them to inhale deeply through their nose, mentally counting to four as they fill their lungs with air.

5. Ask them to hold their breath for a brief moment, counting to two.

6. Instruct students to exhale slowly through their mouth, counting to six as they release all the air from their lungs.

7. Repeat the process for three to five minutes, guiding students with a calm and serene voice.

8. After the practice, ask students to open their eyes and briefly share how they felt during the exercise.

Content Contextualization

News is part of our daily lives and plays a crucial role in keeping us informed about important and impactful events around the world. It helps us form opinions, make decisions, and better understand the society we live in. However, to understand news, it is essential to recognize and deal with the emotions it may evoke. For example, when we read about a tragedy, we may feel sadness or compassion, while a news story about a scientific breakthrough may fill us with hope and enthusiasm. Developing the ability to identify and manage these emotions is essential for a critical and conscious interpretation of the information we receive.

Development

Duration: (60 - 75 minutes)

Theoretical Framework

Duration: (20 - 25 minutes)

1. News Title: The title should be clear and attractive, summarizing the main information of the text. It is the first thing that grabs the reader's attention.

2. Lead: The lead is the first paragraph of the news article and should answer the basic questions: Who? What? When? Where? Why? and How? It provides a summary of the event or fact, delivering the most important information right at the beginning.

3. Body of the News Article: Here, the details of the event are presented in a more complete manner. The body of the news should develop the information introduced in the lead, organizing the paragraphs according to the importance of the facts. Include witness statements, statistical data, background information, and other relevant elements.

4. Conclusion: The conclusion may include a recap of the main facts, a final quote, or a prediction about the developments of the event. It should close the news clearly and cohesively.

5. Example of News: Bring a printed news article from a reliable newspaper or news website to the classroom. Read the title, lead, body, and conclusion, highlighting each part and explaining its purpose and structure.

6. Analogies: Compare the structure of a news article to that of an inverted pyramid, where the most important information is at the top (lead), and additional details decrease in importance as the news progresses. This helps students visualize the hierarchy of information within a news article.

Socioemotional Feedback Activity

Duration: (35 - 40 minutes)

Writing Your Own News Article

In this activity, students will apply what they have learned about the structure of a news article by writing their own news article about a fictional or real event. They should follow the guidelines regarding the title, lead, body, and conclusion to create a cohesive and informative text. This activity will also include a socio-emotional component, where students will reflect on the emotions involved in creating and reading news articles.

1. Divide students into groups of 4 to 5 people.

2. Ask each group to choose a recent or fictional event they would like to turn into news.

3. Instruct students to discuss and define an attractive title for the news article.

4. Guide students to write a lead that answers the basic questions: Who? What? When? Where? Why? and How?

5. Request that the groups develop the body of the news article, including details, statements, and relevant additional information.

6. Ask them to finalize the news article with a clear and cohesive conclusion.

7. After writing the news article, ask groups to read their news out loud to the class.

8. After each reading, conduct a discussion about the emotions evoked by the news and how these emotions can influence text interpretation. Use the RULER method to guide this discussion.

Group Discussion

To apply the RULER method during the group discussion, start by asking students to recognize the emotions they felt when writing and hearing the news (for example, excitement, concern, sadness). Then, encourage students to understand the causes of these emotions by discussing how the content of the news influenced their feelings. Ask them to name these emotions correctly, using appropriate emotional vocabulary.

Next, guide students to express these emotions appropriately, both verbally and through positive and respectful body language. Finally, help students regulate their emotions by offering strategies to deal with intense feelings, such as deep breathing or reflective pauses. This process not only enhances the understanding and production of news but also develops fundamental competencies of self-awareness, self-control, and social consciousness.

Conclusion

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

Emotional Reflection and Regulation

Ask students to participate in a reflection on the challenges faced during the lesson and how they managed their emotions. This can be done through a brief individual writing or a group discussion. Encourage them to share experiences about how they felt during different stages of the lesson, especially when writing and presenting their news. Inquire how they recognized and regulated their emotions using the RULER method. This activity should last between 10 to 15 minutes.

Objective: The objective of this subsection is to encourage students to practice self-assessment and emotional regulation. By reflecting on the challenges faced and the strategies they used to manage their emotions, students can identify effective methods for dealing with future situations. This reinforces self-awareness and self-control, essential for socio-emotional development.

Closure and A Look Into The Future

Explain to students the importance of setting personal and academic goals related to the lesson's content. Ask them to reflect on what they learned about the structure of a news article and the emotions involved in producing and interpreting news. Encourage them to establish clear goals to improve their writing and news comprehension skills, as well as strategies for managing their emotions in future situations. This activity should last between 5 to 10 minutes.

Possible Goal Ideas:

1. Improve the ability to identify and write the structural elements of a news article.

2. Develop the capacity to recognize and name emotions when reading and writing news articles.

3. Practice the appropriate expression of emotions in group discussions.

4. Enhance emotional regulation in pressure situations, such as presenting work.

5. Strengthen the ability to make responsible decisions when selecting information for a news article. Objective: The objective of this subsection is to strengthen students' autonomy and the practical application of learning. By setting personal and academic goals, students can clearly visualize the next steps in their development, both academically and personally. This promotes a sense of continuity and purpose, encouraging them to apply socio-emotional skills and the knowledge gained in future contexts.
