Objectives

Duration: (10 - 15 minutes)

The purpose of this step is to provide a clear and objective understanding of the concepts that will be addressed in the Chemistry class on covalent bonds. Additionally, this step aims to prepare students to recognize the importance of self-awareness and emotional regulation in the context of scientific learning, facilitating the practical application of the concepts studied.

Main Goals

1. Describe the properties of covalent compounds.

2. Identify whether a compound is covalent or not based on its properties.

3. Determine the molecular formula of covalent compounds.

Introduction

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

Emotional Warm-up Activity

Mindfulness for Focus and Concentration

The practice of Mindfulness is a technique of present-moment awareness that helps maintain focus, reducing anxiety and stress. During the activity, students will be guided to pay attention to their breathing and bodily sensations, promoting a state of calm and concentration.

1. Ask the students to settle into their chairs, with their feet firmly on the ground and their hands resting in their laps.

2. Instruct them to close their eyes or gently focus on a point in front of them.

3. Guide the students to begin paying attention to their breathing, observing the air entering and leaving their lungs.

4. Ask the students to breathe deeply through their noses, hold the air for a few seconds, and then slowly release it through their mouths.

5. Encourage them to notice any tensions in their bodies and to consciously relax those areas, releasing any tension as they exhale.

6. Continue to guide deep and relaxed breathing for a few more minutes, maintaining a calm and gentle tone of voice.

7. After a few minutes, ask the students to gently bring their attention back to the classroom, opening their eyes and preparing for the lesson.

Content Contextualization

Covalent bonds, which form the basis of many compounds essential to life, can be compared to human connections. Just as atoms share electrons to form stable bonds, humans share emotions, thoughts, and experiences to build meaningful relationships. Understanding the chemistry behind these bonds can help students perceive how small components can create something larger and more complex, both in the physical world and in social interactions.

This understanding can be a powerful metaphor for the importance of socio-emotional skills. Just as a covalent bond needs balance and sharing to be stable, our emotions and interactions also require recognition, understanding, and regulation to promote a harmonious and productive environment.

Development

Duration: (55 - 65 minutes)

Theoretical Framework

Duration: (25 - 30 minutes)

1. Definition of Covalent Bonds: Explain that covalent bonds are formed by the sharing of pairs of electrons between atoms. It is important to highlight that these bonds primarily occur between non-metal atoms.

2. Types of Covalent Bonds: Discuss the different types of covalent bonds, such as single, double, and triple bonds. Provide examples such as H₂ (hydrogen), O₂ (oxygen), and N₂ (nitrogen) to illustrate each type.

3. Lewis Structures: Introduce Lewis structures, which are graphical representations of atoms and their covalent bonds. Explain how to draw these structures and their importance in understanding electron distribution.

4. Properties of Covalent Compounds: Highlight the main properties of covalent compounds, such as low electrical conductivity, relatively low melting and boiling points, and the formation of discrete molecules.

5. Polarity of Covalent Bonds: Explain the difference between polar and nonpolar covalent bonds. Provide examples such as H₂O (water) for polar bonds and CO₂ (carbon dioxide) for nonpolar bonds.

6. Importance of Covalent Bonds in Daily Life: Relate covalent bonds to everyday compounds, such as water, carbon dioxide, and organic compounds, highlighting their importance for life and industry.

Socioemotional Feedback Activity

Duration: (30 - 35 minutes)

Building Molecular Models

Students will build physical models of covalent molecules using molecular modeling kits or simple materials such as Styrofoam balls and toothpicks. This activity aims to reinforce the understanding of Lewis structures and molecular geometry, as well as promote socio-emotional skills such as teamwork and communication.

1. Divide the class into small groups of 3 to 4 students.

2. Distribute molecular modeling kits or simple materials to each group.

3. Ask the students to choose some covalent molecules to build, such as H₂O, CO₂, CH₄ (methane), and NH₃ (ammonia).

4. Encourage the students to discuss among themselves how to assemble the structures, using Lewis structures as a guide.

5. After building, ask each group to present their molecules to the class, explaining the geometry and covalent bonds present.

6. During the presentation, encourage the students to recognize and name the emotions they felt during the activity (e.g., frustration, joy, collaboration).

Group Discussion

At the end of the presentations, conduct a group discussion using the RULER method. Recognize the emotions expressed by the students during the activity, asking how they felt working in groups and facing challenges. Understand the causes of those emotions, exploring what generated feelings of frustration or satisfaction. Label those emotions correctly, helping students expand their emotional vocabulary. Express the emotions appropriately, encouraging students to talk about their experiences respectfully and openly. Regulate those emotions by discussing strategies for better managing these emotions in future group and academic activities. This can include breathing techniques, strategic breaks, and open communication.

Conclusion

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

Emotional Reflection and Regulation

Suggest that students write a reflective paragraph about the challenges faced during the construction of molecular models and how they managed their emotions. Alternatively, lead a group discussion where each student briefly shares their emotional experiences throughout the activity. Ask what they learned about themselves and how they dealt with feelings of frustration or joy.

Objective: The objective of this subsection is to encourage students to self-assess, reflect on their emotions, and identify effective strategies for dealing with challenging situations. This reflection promotes self-awareness and self-consciousness, essential for emotional regulation.

Closure and A Look Into The Future

Conclude the lesson by asking students to set personal and academic goals related to the content learned about covalent bonds. Discuss how these goals can be achieved and how to apply them in future contexts, both inside and outside the classroom.

Possible Goal Ideas:

1. Completely understand the properties of covalent compounds.

2. Be able to accurately identify and formulate covalent compounds.

3. Apply knowledge about covalent bonds in practical situations and laboratory experiments.

4. Develop teamwork and effective communication skills during group activities.

5. Practice emotional regulation when facing academic challenges. Objective: The objective of this subsection is to strengthen students' autonomy and the practical application of learning, promoting continuity in academic and personal development. Setting clear goals helps students focus their efforts and recognize progress in their educational journey.
