Objectives

Duration: 10 to 15 minutes

The purpose of this stage is to introduce students to the concepts of cartography, establishing a solid foundation for learning. Additionally, it aims to promote socio-emotional development by encouraging the recognition and understanding of emotions during the learning process. This will create a conducive environment for responsible decision-making and the development of social skills and self-awareness.

Main Goals

1. Identify the fundamental concepts of cartography, such as scale, projection, and geotechnology, and their importance for the perception of the passage of time and location.

2. Develop the ability to recognize and understand emotions associated with learning new concepts in cartography, using the RULER method.

Duration: 20 to 25 minutes

Emotional Warm-up Activity

Progressive Muscle Relaxation

The Progressive Muscle Relaxation activity is a technique that involves the contraction and relaxation of different muscle groups in the body. This helps reduce muscle tension and promote a state of deep relaxation. Regular practice of this technique can improve students' concentration and focus, mentally and emotionally preparing them for the class.

1. Ask students to sit comfortably in their chairs, with their feet firmly planted on the ground and their hands on their knees.

2. Instruct students to close their eyes and take a few deep breaths, inhaling through the nose and exhaling through the mouth.

3. Start with the feet: ask students to tense their foot muscles for 5 seconds and then completely relax for 10 seconds.

4. Move up to the calves and repeat the process: tense for 5 seconds and relax for 10 seconds.

5. Continue moving up the body, passing through the thigh muscles, abdomen, chest, arms, hands, neck, and finally the face, following the same pattern of tensing and relaxing.

6. After completing the cycle, ask students to remain silent for a few moments, enjoying the feeling of relaxation.

7. Gradually, ask students to open their eyes and take a few deep breaths before returning their attention to the class.

Cartography is an essential tool that we use daily, often without realizing it. Think about how we use maps on our smartphones to find directions or how map projections can influence our perception of the world. The ability to understand and interpret these maps is crucial not only for geography but also for decision-making in our daily lives. Additionally, by exploring cartography, we can recognize and understand the emotions that arise when we face new challenges and information, such as the frustration of getting lost or the satisfaction of finding the correct path. By understanding cartography, we also develop social skills and self-awareness, which are important for our life in society.

Theoretical Framework

Duration: 25 to 30 minutes

**1. Introduction to Cartography: Explain to students that cartography is the science of creating maps, essential for navigation and understanding different geographic areas. Define cartography as the art, science, and technology of making maps.

Cartographic Scale: Detail that scale is the relationship between one unit of measurement on the map and the corresponding unit in reality. Provide an example with a scale of 1:100,000, where 1 cm on the map equals 1 km in reality. Explain the difference between large (detailed) and small (less detailed) scales.

Cartographic Projections: Discuss that projections are methods for representing the Earth's curved surface on a flat surface. Highlight the main projections: cylindrical, conical, and azimuthal. Use examples such as the Mercator Projection (cylindrical) and the Peters Projection, explaining their advantages and disadvantages.

Geotechnologies: Introduce the technologies used in modern cartography, such as GPS, GIS (Geographic Information Systems), and remote sensing. Explain how these tools assist in the collection and analysis of geographic data.

Practical Applications: Provide practical examples of how cartography is used in daily life, such as navigation through mapping applications, urban planning, and environmental studies. Encourage students to think of other situations where maps are essential.**

Socioemotional Feedback Activity

Duration: 35 to 40 minutes

Creating Maps with Emotions

Students will be divided into groups and tasked with creating a map of a fictional area, using different scales and cartographic projections. During the activity, they should identify and express the emotions that arise when dealing with the challenges of cartography. The goal is to integrate the theoretical content of cartography with the development of socio-emotional skills.

1. Divide students into groups of 4 to 5 people.

2. Distribute paper, ruler, pencil, and eraser to each group.

3. Instruct the groups to choose a fictional area to map (it could be an imaginary city, an island, etc.).

4. Ask them to develop two different maps of the same area, using a large scale and a small scale.

5. Then, ask them to use two different cartographic projections to represent the area (it could be cylindrical and conical, for example).

6. During the activity, ask them to note the emotions they feel when facing challenges, such as frustration, satisfaction, anxiety, etc.

7. After completing the maps, each group should present their results and share the emotions they experienced during the process.

Group Discussion

After the presentation of the maps, start a group discussion focused on the RULER method. Recognize the emotions shared by students, validating their experiences. Understand the causes of these emotions, asking how the specific challenges of the activity influenced their feelings. Name the emotions correctly, helping students identify whether they felt frustrated, anxious, or satisfied.

Express your own emotions appropriately, demonstrating empathy and encouraging students to do the same. Regulate emotions by suggesting strategies to deal with future frustrations and anxieties, such as practicing deep breathing or breaking tasks into smaller steps. This process will help students develop self-awareness and self-control skills, which are fundamental for their emotional and academic growth.

Start a reflection with students about the challenges faced throughout the class, either through a group discussion or a written activity. Explain that these goals may include deepening their studies in cartography, applying knowledge in future projects, or developing specific skills, such as accuracy in reading maps.
