Objectives

Duration: (10 - 15 minutes)

The purpose of this stage is to prepare students for the content of point, plane, and line, establishing a solid foundation for understanding Euclid's postulates. At the same time, it seeks to develop students' socio-emotional skills, such as self-knowledge and self-control, recognizing and understanding the emotions that may arise during math study. This approach aims to create a more welcoming and effective learning environment.

Main Goals

1. Develop notions of point, plane, and line, as well as Euclid's postulates.

2. Apply the concepts of point, plane, and line to solve geometric problems.

3. Promote the identification and understanding of the emotions involved in the mathematical learning process.

Introduction

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

Emotional Warm-up Activity

Deep Breathing for Concentration

The Deep Breathing activity is a simple and effective technique that helps promote focus, presence, and concentration among students. It consists of a set of breathing exercises that calm the mind and body, reducing anxiety and stress. Through controlled breathing, students become more aware of their emotions and thoughts, creating an internal environment conducive to learning.

1. Ask students to sit comfortably in their chairs, with their backs straight and feet on the floor.

2. Instruct students to close their eyes and place one hand on their abdomen and the other on their chest.

3. Explain that they should inhale deeply through the nose, feeling the abdomen expand as the air enters. Ask them to hold their breath for a few seconds.

4. Then, ask them to exhale slowly through the mouth, feeling the abdomen contract as the air leaves. Repeat this deep breathing cycle for five minutes.

5. During the practice, encourage students to focus only on their breathing and to set aside any thoughts or concerns.

6. After the five minutes, ask students to slowly open their eyes and share, if they wish, how they feel after the activity.

Content Contextualization

Geometry is present in our daily lives in various ways, from the architecture of buildings to the design of the objects we use. Understanding the concepts of point, plane, and line is fundamental not only for solving math problems but also for developing logical and spatial thinking skills. These concepts are the foundation for many other areas of knowledge, such as engineering, physics, and art.

Moreover, learning math can bring out different emotions in students, such as frustration, anxiety, or satisfaction. Recognizing and understanding these emotions is crucial for students to manage them positively and constructively. By exploring geometric concepts, students will also have the opportunity to develop important socio-emotional skills, such as self-knowledge and self-control, creating a more balanced and effective learning environment.

1. Definition of Point: Explain that a point is a fundamental geometric object that has no dimension, width, or height. Use simple analogies, such as 'a point is like a mark made by a sharp pencil on paper'.

2. Definition of Line: Detail that a line is an infinite set of points aligned in the same direction. The line has no beginning or end. Exemplify with 'a line drawn with a ruler that extends infinitely in both directions'.

3. Definition of Plane: Describe that a plane is a flat surface that extends infinitely in all directions. Compare it to 'the smooth surface of a table that can extend forever'.

4. Euclid's Postulates: Introduce Euclid's postulates that are the foundation of Euclidean geometry. Specify the postulate stating 'through a point not on a line, there passes only one line parallel to the given line'.

5. Practical Examples: Provide practical examples such as 'if a line represents a train track, a plane could be the surface of the paper where the map of the tracks is drawn'.

6. Visual Analogies: Use boards, graphs, or drawings on the chalkboard to visually represent the concepts of point, line, and plane. Using the analogy of latitude and longitude lines on Earth can be useful to illustrate lines and planes.

Socioemotional Feedback Activity

Geometry Construction with Strings and Pins

In this activity, students will use strings, pins, and a foam base to create physical representations of points, lines, and planes. This will help solidify the theoretical concepts learned and will allow students to work in teams, developing social and emotional skills.

1. Divide the class into groups of 3 to 4 students.

2. Give each group a foam base, pins, and strings of different colors.

3. Ask students to represent a point by placing a pin in the foam.

4. Instruct students to create a line by stretching a string between two pins.

5. Request that they represent a plane using a set of parallel and perpendicular strings that intersect.

6. During the activity, circulate around the room to offer assistance and ensure that all groups understand and participate actively.

7. After the construction, ask each group to explain their representations and how the concepts of point, line, and plane were applied.

Group Discussion

To apply the RULER method in the discussion and feedback, start by recognizing students' emotions during the activity. Ask them how they felt working in teams and trying to represent abstract concepts in a concrete way. Encourage students to share their experiences and feelings. Then, help them understand the causes of these emotions. Discuss how group collaboration can generate feelings of cooperation and sometimes frustration. Ask them to name these emotions correctly, identifying whether they felt anxiety, joy, confusion, etc. Encourage students to express these emotions appropriately by discussing how they dealt with difficulties and how they felt overcoming challenges. Finally, promote emotion regulation by suggesting strategies for dealing with future frustrations, such as asking for help or distributing tasks more evenly.

Suggest that students engage in a written reflection or participate in a group discussion about the challenges faced during the lesson, especially when dealing with the concepts of point, plane, and line, and how they managed their emotions. Ask them to describe specific situations they found challenging and how they felt in those situations. Encourage them to reflect on the strategies they used to overcome these challenges and how these strategies can be applied in other areas of life.

Ask each student to define a personal goal and an academic goal to continue developing their skills in geometry and their socio-emotional competencies. For example, an academic goal could be to solve a specific set of geometric problems each week, while a personal goal could be to practice emotional regulation techniques when feeling frustration or anxiety about studies.
