Objectives

Duration: (10 - 15 minutes)

The purpose of this stage of the Socioemotional Lesson Plan is to contextualize students about the topic to be studied, establishing a solid knowledge base about vitamins and minerals. At the same time, it aims to develop the competency of social awareness by understanding the importance of these nutrients for overall health and well-being, and the competency of responsible decision-making by evaluating the impacts of their dietary choices.

Main Goals

1. Understand what vitamins and minerals are, identifying their functions and importance for the human body.

2. Recognize the possible effects of deficiencies or excesses of vitamins and minerals in the body, promoting responsible decision-making regarding nutrition.

Introduction

Duration: (20 - 25 minutes)

Emotional Warm-up Activity

Guided Mindfulness Meditation

Mindfulness practice, also known as being present, involves focusing the mind on the present moment, helping to improve concentration and reduce stress. This activity will be a guided mindfulness meditation where students will be instructed to focus on their breathing and release thoughts and worries, promoting a state of calm and focus for the lesson.

1. Ask students to sit comfortably in their chairs, with their feet flat on the floor and hands resting on their thighs.

2. Suggest that they close their eyes or maintain a soft gaze, focused on a fixed point ahead.

3. Guide them to begin breathing deeply, inhaling through the nose and exhaling through the mouth, slowly and controlled.

4. Tell students to focus their attention on the sensation of air entering and leaving the body, noticing the movement of the abdomen and chest.

5. Explain that it is normal for thoughts and distractions to arise. When this happens, ask them to gently bring their attention back to their breathing without judgment.

6. Continue guiding the breathing for about 5 to 7 minutes, using a calm and relaxing tone.

7. To finish, ask students to slowly bring their attention back to the room, open their eyes, and do light stretches if they wish.

Content Contextualization

Vitamins and minerals are essential nutrients for the proper functioning of the human body. They play vital roles in processes such as energy production, immune system maintenance, and bone health. For example, vitamin C is crucial for collagen production, which keeps skin and tissues in good condition, while calcium is fundamental for bone and dental health.

However, a deficiency or excess of these nutrients can lead to serious health problems. Vitamin D deficiency, for instance, can cause rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults. On the other hand, too much vitamin A can lead to toxicity and liver problems. Understanding the importance of balancing the intake of these nutrients is fundamental to making responsible decisions about nutrition and well-being.

7. Vitamin E: Acts as an antioxidant, protecting cells from damage. Present in vegetable oils, nuts, and seeds.

8. Vitamin K: Important for blood clotting and bone health. Found in green leafy vegetables and broccoli.

9. Vitamin C: Necessary for collagen synthesis and immune function. Found in citrus fruits, strawberries, and peppers.

10. B Complex: Includes various vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9, B12) that aid in energy metabolism and nervous system function. Found in meats, whole grains, and vegetables.

18. Sodium: Essential for fluid balance and nerve function. Present in table salt and processed foods.

19. Iron: Fundamental for hemoglobin formation and oxygen transport. Found in red meats, beans, and spinach.

20. Zinc: Important for immune function and wound healing. Present in meats, seeds, and nuts.

Students will be divided into groups and given food labels to analyze the presence of vitamins and minerals. They will identify the nutrients present, discuss the importance of each, and present their conclusions to the class.

1. Divide the class into groups of 4 to 5 students.

2. Distribute various food labels to each group.

3. Ask the groups to identify the vitamins and minerals present on the labels.

4. Each group should discuss the importance of the nutrients found and the possible effects of their deficiency or excess.

5. Request that each group prepares a brief presentation (3-5 minutes) with their conclusions.

6. Each group presents their conclusions to the class.

Group Discussion

After the presentations, facilitate a group discussion applying the RULER method. First, recognize the students' emotions when presenting their findings, encouraging them to express how they felt during the activity. Next, help them to understand the causes and consequences of these emotions by questioning what they learned about the importance of nutrients and how this might impact their food choices. Name the emotions correctly, helping students identify feelings such as surprise, concern, or satisfaction. Encourage them to express these emotions appropriately, whether through words or gestures, promoting healthy communication in the group. Finally, discuss strategies to regulate these emotions, such as the importance of maintaining a balanced diet and being aware of the nutritional information of the foods they consume.

Conclusion

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

Emotional Reflection and Regulation

To close the lesson, suggest that students reflect on the challenges faced during the lesson and how they managed their emotions. This activity can be done in writing or through a group discussion. Ask students to write a paragraph about times they felt difficulty and how they dealt with those situations. Then, promote an open discussion where students can share their experiences, highlighting what they learned about their own emotional reactions and regulation strategies.

Objective: The objective of this activity is to encourage students to conduct a self-assessment and recognize how they deal with challenging situations. By reflecting on their emotions and regulation strategies, students can identify effective methods for handling future challenges, promoting deeper self-knowledge and better self-control.

Closure and A Look Into The Future

To conclude the lesson, ask students to set personal and academic goals related to the content learned. Suggest they write their goals down, highlighting both short-term goals (such as reviewing the concepts learned at home) and long-term goals (such as applying knowledge of vitamins and minerals to improve their diet).

Possible Goal Ideas:

1. Review the concepts of vitamins and minerals at home.

2. Apply knowledge about nutrients to improve daily nutrition.
