Essential Sentence Terms: Predicate and Predicative

Lesson Plan | Active Learning | Essential Sentence Terms: Predicate and Predicative

KeywordsPredicate, Predicative, Sentence, Linguistic Analysis, Interactive Activities, Collaboration, Group Discussion, Communication, Sentence Structure, Practical Learning, Dramatization, Linguistic Games, Term Identification
Required MaterialsCards with enigmatic sentences, Markers, Sets of words (verbs, adjectives, predicatives), Scenarios for plays, Writing materials (paper, pens)

Assumptions: This Active Lesson Plan assumes: a 100-minute class, prior student study with both the Book and the start of Project development, and that only one activity (among the three suggested) will be chosen to be conducted during the class, as each activity is designed to take up a significant portion of the available time.

Objectives

Duration: (5 - 10 minutes)

The Objectives stage is crucial for establishing learning expectations and focus for the lesson. By clearly defining what is expected of students, it facilitates the guidance of subsequent activities and student engagement. This section also serves to align teaching goals with students' learning needs, ensuring that all participants are directed toward the same educational objectives.

Main Objectives:

1. Enable students to understand the structure and importance of the essential terms of the sentence, specifically the predicate and the predicative.

2. Develop skills for identifying and classifying the predicate and the predicative in different types of sentences.

Introduction

Duration: (20 - 25 minutes)

The Introduction serves to engage students with the content they studied previously by using problem situations that encourage them to apply knowledge practically and contextually. In addition, the Contextualization section helps students understand the relevance of the content in real life, increasing their interest and motivation for the lesson. This approach helps prepare students for deeper and more meaningful learning during the execution of activities.

Problem-Based Situations

1. Imagine someone tells you a story about a day of fishing. In the story, there is the following sentence: 'The fish were eagerly biting the bait.' How would you identify the predicate and the predicative in this sentence?

2. Consider the following situation: a journalist interviews an athlete about their training routine. During the interview, the athlete says: 'Running is my passion, and athletics is my life.' How would you analyze the predicate and the predicative of the athlete's sentences?

Contextualization

The terms 'predicate' and 'predicative' are essential for understanding the structure and meaning of sentences in Portuguese. Interestingly, these terms are not always so clear, even for native speakers. For example, we can use the predicative to emphasize or add extra information to the subject or object, as in 'The sky was full of stars,' where 'full of stars' is additional information about the sky, in addition to being related to the verb 'to be.' This ability to enrich communication makes the study of these terms even more relevant.

Development

Duration: (75 - 85 minutes)

The Development section is designed to allow students to practically and contextually apply the knowledge acquired about the predicate and the predicative. By working in groups, students have the opportunity to discuss, argue, and collaborate, which not only solidifies their understanding of the content but also develops social and communication skills. The activities are planned to be dynamic and engaging, ensuring that students are actively participating and learning throughout the process.

Activity Suggestions

It is recommended to carry out only one of the suggested activities

Activity 1 - Predicate and Predicative Detectives

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Develop the ability to identify and classify predicate and predicative in complex contexts, promoting collaboration and argumentation among students.

- Description: In this playful activity, students will transform into linguistic detectives to solve puzzles based on complex sentences containing the terms predicate and predicative. Each group will receive a set of cards containing enigmatic sentences. They will need to identify and classify the predicate and the predicative in each one, using their analytical skills and prior knowledge.

- Instructions:

  • Divide the class into groups of up to 5 students.

  • Distribute the sets of cards to each group. Each card contains an enigmatic sentence.

  • Students should discuss in groups and identify the predicate and the predicative of each sentence. They can use markers to highlight these terms.

  • Each group will present their answers and justifications to the class.

  • Conduct a common discussion to clarify doubts and reinforce collective learning.

Activity 2 - Building Stories with Predicates

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Encourage creativity and practical understanding of the use of predicate and predicative in narrative construction.

- Description: Students, organized in groups, will receive sets of words that correspond to different terms of the predicate and the predicative. They will use these words to construct mini-stories, ensuring that each term is correctly applied in the sentence structure.

- Instructions:

  • Organize students into groups of up to 5 people.

  • Distribute to each group a set of words that include verbs, adjectives, and possible predicatives.

  • Groups must use the words to construct mini-stories, ensuring the correct application of predicate and predicative.

  • Each group presents their story to the class, and the other students must identify the predicate and the predicative used.

  • Promote a discussion about how the choice of terms affects the meaning of the story.

Activity 3 - Theater of Predicates

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Explore the use of predicate and predicative in a creative and dynamic way, as well as promote oral expression and collaboration skills.

- Description: In this activity, students will create and stage small plays in which the predicate and the predicative play essential roles in the plot. Each group will receive a scenario and must develop a dialogue that highlights the use of these terms, ensuring that they are clearly identified and applied.

- Instructions:

  • Divide the class into groups of up to 5 students.

  • Assign each group a different scenario involving situations where the use of the predicate and the predicative is fundamental.

  • Groups must write a dialogue that prominently includes the predicate and the predicative.

  • Each group will perform their play for the class, and the other students must identify and discuss the use of the terms in the performance.

  • Conduct a collective feedback session about the performances.

Feedback

Duration: (10 - 15 minutes)

The purpose of this stage is to consolidate learning, allowing students to articulate and reflect on the knowledge acquired. Group discussion helps develop communication and argumentation skills, as well as providing an environment for students to clarify doubts and understand different approaches. This collective feedback is essential to evaluate the effectiveness of the activities and ensure that all students have comprehended the key concepts of predicate and predicative.

Group Discussion

At the end of the activities, organize a group discussion with all students. Start the discussion by asking each group to share their key discoveries and challenges faced during the activities. Then, encourage the exchange of ideas among groups, prompting them to comment on and question each other's approaches. This is an opportunity for students to articulate what they learned, reflect on different perspectives, and reinforce their understanding of the concepts of predicate and predicative.

Key Questions

1. What were the main criteria your group used to identify the predicate and the predicative in the sentences from the activities?

2. How can the use of the predicative alter the meaning of a sentence?

3. Was there any sentence that you initially classified incorrectly? What made you change your mind?

Conclusion

Duration: (5 - 10 minutes)

The purpose of the Conclusion is to ensure that students have a clear and consolidated understanding of the terms predicate and predicative, as well as understanding their practical applicability. This moment is crucial to reinforce learning and for students to reflect on the importance of the concepts addressed in their own language and daily communication.

Summary

To conclude the lesson, the teacher should summarize the main points discussed regarding the predicate and the predicative, reinforcing the definition of each term and providing examples from the activities. It is essential to recap the basic structures of sentences and how these essential terms apply in different contexts.

Theory Connection

During the lesson, students had the opportunity to connect theory with practice through interactive and contextualized activities. Through games, dramatizations, and story construction, they applied prior knowledge in a dynamic way, which facilitated comprehension and retention of the content.

Closing

Understanding the predicate and the predicative is fundamental not only for studying the Portuguese language but also for enhancing students' communication skills in everyday situations. The ability to identify and correctly use these terms in different contexts enriches the students' written and oral expression.
