Introduction

Duration: 20 - 25 minutes

Emotional Warm-up Activity

Mindfulness for Focus and Presence

The emotional warm-up activity will be a Mindfulness session focused on breathing and being present in the moment. This practice will help students focus, reduce anxiety, and prepare mentally for Physical Education class.

1. Ask students to sit comfortably on the floor or in chairs, keeping their spine straight and feet firmly planted on the ground.

2. Guide them to close their eyes or, if they prefer, to maintain a soft gaze focused on a point ahead.

3. Instruct students to start paying attention to their breathing, observing the air entering and leaving their bodies. Ask them not to try to change their breathing, just to observe it.

4. After a few moments, guide them through a cycle of deep breaths: inhale through the nose counting to four, hold the breath counting to four, and exhale through the mouth counting to four. Repeat this cycle five times.

5. After the deep breaths, ask students to return to observing their natural breathing. If thoughts arise, instruct them to acknowledge those thoughts without judgment and gently bring their attention back to their breath.

6. Continue the practice for a few more minutes, encouraging presence in the moment and observation of breathing.

7. To conclude, ask students to begin to slowly open their eyes and do some gentle stretches to awaken their bodies.

Content Contextualization

Socioemotional Feedback Activity

Duration: 30 - 35 minutes

Handball Game with Socio-emotional Feedback

In this practical activity, students will form two teams and play a game of handball. During the game, the teacher will observe and note behaviors related to socio-emotional competencies such as cooperation, communication, and emotional control.

1. Divide students into two balanced teams, considering skills and levels of experience.

2. Explain that the focus of the game will be on both technical skills and socio-emotional competencies, such as cooperation and emotional control.

3. Start the game, acting as referee and observer. Note positive behaviors and areas for improvement related to socio-emotional competencies.

4. After the game, gather students in a circle for discussion and feedback.

Group Discussion

For the group discussion, use the RULER method:

Recognize: Start by asking students to share how they felt during the game. Ask about specific moments when they felt happy, frustrated, or motivated. Understand: Encourage students to reflect on the causes of those emotions. Ask what happened in the game that triggered those emotions and how they affected their performance and team dynamics. Label: Help students to accurately label those emotions. Explain the importance of recognizing and labeling emotions for better understanding and communication. Express: Discuss appropriate ways to express those emotions during the game. Ask how they could have better communicated their feelings and needs to teammates. Regulate: Finally, talk about strategies to regulate emotions during the game. Discuss breathing techniques, positive thinking, and how to support teammates emotionally.

Conclusion

Duration: 15 - 20 minutes

Emotional Reflection and Regulation

Suggest students engage in written reflection or discussion about the challenges faced during the class and how they managed their emotions. For the written version, ask each student to write a paragraph about a specific moment they found challenging and how they reacted emotionally. In the discussion version, form small groups and encourage students to share their experiences and strategies for emotional regulation. After the group discussion, gather everyone for a plenary discussion where each group can share their main insights.

Objective: The objective of this activity is to encourage students to practice self-assessment and emotional regulation. By reflecting on the challenges faced and how they managed their emotions, students will be able to identify effective strategies for dealing with challenging situations. This not only aids in the development of self-awareness and self-control but also promotes problem-solving skills and responsible decision-making in the context of handball.

Closure and A Look Into The Future

To conclude the class, suggest that students set personal and academic goals related to the content learned. Explain that these goals can include improving a specific skill in handball, such as a type of shot, or developing a socio-emotional competency, such as teamwork. Encourage students to write these goals down on paper and share them with a classmate or the group, fostering a public commitment to their objectives.

Possible Goal Ideas:

1. Improve the jump shot in handball.

2. Develop better communication during the game.

3. Enhance the ability to work as a team.

4. Learn more about the history of handball.

5. Participate in a school handball championship. Objective: The aim of this subsection is to strengthen students' autonomy and the practical application of learning, aiming for continuity in academic and personal development. Setting clear and specific goals related to the class content helps students maintain focus and motivation to develop both in sports and socio-emotional competencies.
