Objectives

Duration: (10 - 15 minutes)

The purpose of this stage of the Socioemotional Lesson Plan is to prepare students for understanding and analyzing popular science texts. Through the development of self-knowledge and social awareness, students will be able to recognize their own emotions and those of others when interacting with content, understand the causes and consequences of these emotions, and express them appropriately. This will provide a solid foundation for critical analysis and a deep understanding of the topic addressed.

Main Goals

1. Understand what a popular science text is and its main characteristics.

2. Develop the ability to identify scholarly writing in popular science texts.

Introduction

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

Emotional Warm-up Activity

Mindfulness for Focus and Concentration

The emotional warm-up activity is a mindfulness practice aimed at promoting focus, presence, and concentration among students. This practice involves mindful attention to the present moment, using breathing and awareness of bodily sensations to calm the mind and prepare students for class.

1. Ask students to sit comfortably in their chairs, with their feet flat on the ground and their hands resting on their laps.

2. Instruct them to close their eyes or, if they prefer, to focus their gaze on a point on the floor.

3. Guide students to start paying attention to their breath, feeling the air entering and leaving their lungs.

4. After a few moments, ask students to bring their attention to their bodies, noticing any tension or discomfort and allowing those areas to relax.

5. Next, ask students to imagine a calm and relaxing light starting at the top of their heads and slowly descending through their bodies, relaxing each muscle it passes through.

6. Let them remain in this state of relaxation for a few minutes, encouraging them to keep their attention on their breath and bodily sensations.

7. Finally, ask students to slowly open their eyes and do some light stretching to return to a state of alertness.

Content Contextualization

Popular science texts are essential for making knowledge accessible to different audiences. They translate the technical and complex language of science into a form that everyone can understand. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, many popular science texts helped us better understand the virus, prevention measures, and the importance of vaccination. These texts not only inform but also have the power to calm anxieties, promote healthy behaviors, and ultimately save lives.

Understanding and producing popular science texts requires not only cognitive skills but also emotional skills. While reading about new discoveries, students may feel a range of emotions—from curiosity to empathy for those directly impacted by scientific discoveries. Developing this sensitivity is crucial for a deeper and more responsible understanding of science in our society.

Development

Duration: (60 - 75 minutes)

Theoretical Framework

Duration: (20 - 25 minutes)

1. Definition of Popular Science Text: Explain that a popular science text is a type of text aimed at making scientific information and discoveries accessible to the lay public. It translates the technical and complex language of science into simpler and more understandable language.

2. Main Characteristics: Detail that popular science texts are characterized by clear and objective language, detailed explanations, use of everyday examples, and often the presence of illustrations and graphs to facilitate understanding. They also tend to address current and socially relevant topics.

3. Example of a Text: Present an example of a popular science text, such as an article about COVID-19 vaccines published in a popular science magazine. Highlight how the text explains scientific concepts in an accessible way and uses illustrations to complement the explanation.

4. Scholarly Writing: Explain that, although the goal is to simplify content, popular science texts often use scholarly writing, with technical terms that are explained throughout the text. This type of writing lends credibility to the text and helps educate the reader about scientific terminology.

5. Analogies and Examples: Use analogies to facilitate students' understanding. For example, compare popular science communication to translating a complex language into a simpler one. Provide examples of how a scientific discovery can be explained in a way that even children can understand.

Socioemotional Feedback Activity

Duration: (35 - 40 minutes)

Analysis of Popular Science Text

In this activity, students will be divided into groups and given different popular science texts to analyze. They should identify the main characteristics of these texts, the presence of scholarly writing, and discuss the emotions they feel when reading about the topics addressed.

1. Divide students into groups of 4 to 5 people.

2. Distribute different popular science texts to each group.

3. Ask them to read the text together and identify the main characteristics mentioned in the theory.

4. Guide the groups to discuss the presence of scholarly writing in the text and how it is explained.

5. Request that each group discuss the emotions they feel when reading about the topic addressed in the text, using the RULER method.

6. Ask each group to prepare a brief presentation of their analyses and discussions to share with the class.

Group Discussion

For the group discussion and socioemotional feedback, use the RULER method to guide the conversation. Recognize the emotions that arose during the reading of the texts, both positive and negative. Understand the causes of these emotions, discussing how the theme of the text and its social relevance can emotionally impact students. Name the emotions accurately, encouraging students to clearly express what they felt.

Express emotions appropriately, fostering a safe and welcoming environment for everyone to share their experiences without judgment. Regulate emotions effectively, discussing strategies for self-control and empathy when dealing with scientific topics that can be emotionally charged. This process will help students develop a deeper and more responsible understanding of popular science texts, as well as strengthen their socioemotional skills.

Conclusion

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

Emotional Reflection and Regulation

Activity: Ask students to write a brief paragraph or participate in a group discussion about the challenges they faced during the lesson and how they managed their emotions. Encourage them to reflect on specific moments when they felt intense emotions and how they handled those situations. Ask how they could apply what they learned about emotional regulation in other areas of their academic and personal lives.

Objective: Objective: This subsection aims to encourage self-assessment and emotional regulation, helping students identify effective strategies for dealing with challenging situations. By reflecting on their emotional experiences during the lesson, students will be able to develop greater self-knowledge and self-control, essential for their personal and academic growth.

Closure and A Look Into The Future

Activity: Instruct students to set personal and academic goals related to the lesson content. Ask them to write these goals down on a paper or in their notebooks, highlighting how they plan to achieve them. Discuss as a group how these goals can be monitored and adjusted over time.

Possible Goal Ideas:

1. Deeply understand popular science texts.

2. Improve the ability to identify and use scholarly writing.

3. Apply emotional regulation strategies in academic situations.

4. Develop the ability to work collaboratively in groups.

5. Strengthen empathy and social awareness when reading about scientific topics. Objective: Objective: This subsection seeks to strengthen students' autonomy and practical application of learning. By setting personal and academic goals, students are encouraged to continue developing their skills and knowledge, promoting ongoing academic and personal development. This practice also reinforces the importance of self-assessment and planning for future success.
