Mathematics is constantly present around us and it is an essential tool for understanding the world. Among its countless concepts and applications, basic shapes are foundational, as they pervade the way we perceive space and the environment. Triangles, squares, rectangles, circles and the diverse spatial figures — such as cubes, spheres, cylinders — represent foundational elements of our reality, from the buildings we construct to the objects we use.
In this project, we will delve into the world of basic shapes, exploring and differentiating plane and spatial figures, besides understanding their properties and applications in the real world. Through practical activities, you will have the opportunity not only to solidify this mathematical knowledge, but also to develop important socioemotional skills, such as teamwork, time management, creative thinking and problem solving.
Theoretical Introduction
Mathematics, in its essence, is the science that studies the properties and relations of abstract entities (numbers, figures, structures) through a logical and precise language. Among its diverse branches, Geometry is responsible for the study of shapes and dimensions of objects. In it, basic shapes represent the fundamental principles of this science.
Basic shapes are divided into two main categories: plane shapes and spatial shapes. Plane shapes, also known as plane figures, are those that develop in a single plane and have only two dimensions, length and width. Triangles, squares, rectangles and circles are classic examples of plane figures. Spatial shapes are those that have three dimensions, length, width and height. Some examples of spatial shapes are cubes, spheres, pyramids and cylinders.
These shapes are the building blocks of the physical world around us. They help us understand and describe the structure of buildings, objects, nature and practically everything we can see and touch. Understanding basic shapes and their properties is, thus, a crucial step in education, particularly in mathematical formation, and this project aims to bring this understanding in a playful and engaging way.

Practical Activity
Title: "Exploring the World of Shapes"
Project Objective
This activity aims to provide students with a practical experience for the study of basic shapes, where they will be immersed in exploring, creating and differentiating plane and spatial figures.
Project Description
Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 participants and will perform a practical work in which they will explore the environment around them to identify objects with basic plane and spatial shapes. Furthermore, they must build a three-dimensional model that represents a mini city or a park using basic shapes.
Necessary Materials
- A4 paper
- Pencil
- Ruler
- Scissors
- Glue
- Colored cardstock
- Adhesive tapes
- Toothpicks
- Modeling clay
Step by Step

Gather the group and discuss the concept of basic shapes, highlighting the difference between plane and spatial shapes.

Once they understand the concept, each group must divide and explore the school environment (or even their homes) and list objects that are examples of plane and spatial shapes. Write down the objects and the corresponding shapes.

With the list in hand, draw the listed objects on an A4 paper representing their shapes. Use the ruler to help you draw.

The next step is building a three-dimensional model. Use the colored cardstock, the scissors, the glue, the adhesive tape and the toothpicks to build a mini city or park model, using as many plane and spatial basic shapes as possible. The modeling clay can be used to create people or animals simulations for the city/park. The challenge is to find a creative way to represent each shape in the project.

After finishing the model, each group must prepare a short presentation explaining their project, talking about the chosen objects, the shapes they represent and detailing the construction of the model.

Finally, each group must write a document that will serve as a project report. In it, students must address:
- Introduction: Commenting on the theme and the objective of the project and its relevance.
- Development: Describing the theory on basic shapes, explaining the activity in detail, indicating the methodology used and presenting the results obtained.
- Conclusion: Discussing what was learnt and what were the conclusions drawn from the project.
- Bibliography: Listing all the knowledge sources that were used to carry out the project.
Project Deliverables
Students must deliver:
- The list with the identified objects and their corresponding shapes.
- The drawing of the objects representing their shapes.
- The three-dimensional model of the mini city or park.
- An oral presentation on the project.
- The written document, with all sections (Introduction, Development, Conclusion, Bibliography) duly completed.
The written document is an essential part of the project, as it is through it that students will express their understanding of the concepts addressed, the practical application of those concepts and the reflection on what was learned. It is important that the report is coherent with the practical activities carried out, providing a detailed summary of the experience, the difficulties faced, the discoveries and the solutions found.
Remember that documenting the process is as important as the final product, so be detailed and precise in the descriptions. Work as a team to elaborate the report, dividing responsibilities and guaranteeing that everyone contributes to the final result.
