When we say that something is greater than something else, we mean that the first thing is "bigger" or has more "size" than the second thing. For example, an elephant is greater than a dog.
When we say that something is less than something else, we mean that the first thing is "smaller" or has less "size" than the second thing. For example, a cat is less than an elephant.

Project Goal
The goal of this project is to explore the concept of comparing sizes by terms and to develop skills such as problem solving, teamwork, critical thinking, and communication.
Detailed Description of Project
In this activity, you little mathematicians will create a "Comparison Game". Each group will create illustrated cards with different pairs of objects for their classmates to compare the sizes and decide using the terms of comparison: "greater than", "less than", or "equal to".
Required Materials
- Cardstock or construction paper
- Colored pencils, markers, or crayons
- Ruler
- Scissors (ask for help from an adult)
- Glue
- Old magazines or printed images (optional)
Step by Step

Form groups of 3 to 5 students.

Each group will receive 10 cardstock or construction paper cards to make their comparison cards.

On each card, draw or glue a picture of a pair of objects. For example, a card could have a drawing of an elephant and a dog. Remember that the images should show objects of different sizes so that the comparison can be made.

Under each image, write one of the terms of comparison: "greater than", "less than", or "equal to", according to the comparison between the objects in the image. For example, if the elephant is larger than the dog, write "greater than" under the elephant.

When all the cards are ready, mix them up and place them upside down on the table.

Now, it is time to play! The first player flips over two cards and compares the objects. They must say which one is bigger, which one is smaller, or if they are equal.
