Get ready for an artistic adventure, 2nd graders! In this project, we'll dive into the world of 'Art Spaces,' discover their importance and role in our culture and society, and then create our very own miniature Art Space!
So, what are 'Art Spaces'? These are special places where art is created, displayed, and shared. They can be art galleries, museums, art schools, artists' studios, concert halls, theaters, or even outdoor spaces where we can stumble upon sculptures and murals. In these places, we can experience everything from classic paintings and sculptures to contemporary dance performances, theater productions, and even digital art!

Hands-on Activity: "Creating our Art Space"
Project Goal
The goal of this activity is to create a miniature 'Art Space' using recycled materials and art and craft supplies. Along the way, students will develop teamwork, time management, and problem-solving skills.
Project Outline
Each group of students will plan and assemble a miniature 'Art Space.' Students should consider the type of art that will be displayed and how the artwork will be arranged in their space. The final product will be a model of an art space.
Materials you'll need
- Shoebox (this will be your 'Art Space')
- Cardboard, paper, crayons, markers
- Glue, safety scissors
- Assorted recyclable materials: bottle caps, popsicle sticks, toilet paper rolls, etc.
- Magazines for cutting out images (optional)
Step-by-Step Instructions

Planning: As a group, discuss and decide what kind of 'Art Space' you'd like to create. Is it an art gallery, a theater, a dance studio, etc.? Think about what kind of art you'd like to display in your space.

Design: Draw a plan for your 'Art Space.' Be sure to include where the artwork will be displayed and any other features your space might have, like an entrance, a stage, chairs, etc.

Building: Use the shoebox as your 'Art Space.' Now start building, following the plan you drew. You can use your recycled materials to create artwork, chairs, tables, and anything else you want to add to your space.

Decorating: Use the crayons, markers, and magazine cutouts to decorate your 'Art Space.' Get creative!

Presenting: When you're finished, present your 'Art Space' to the class. Talk about your planning, the decisions you made as a group, and why you made them.
Deliverables
At the end of the week, each group will present their 'Art Space' to the class. The presentation should include a tour of the space, a description of the artwork, and a discussion of the group's teamwork process, creative thinking, and decision-making. Each group will have about 10 minutes to present their work.
