Space in the Construction of Dance Movements

Introduction

Hello, class! This month, we are going to embark on a journey through the dance universe and discover how space influences our movements and our perception of how dance unfolds. This may seem complex at first glance, but we will unravel these concepts together in a playful and fun way.

Within dance, there are two key theoretical concepts that help us understand the role of space: personal space and general space. Personal space is the space our body occupies when we dance, basically where we can move without displacing. General space, on the other hand, is the space beyond our body, where we move as we dance. The way we move in these spaces, and how we do it in relation to others, creates what we call orientation in space.

It is also important to understand the concept of directionality, that is, the different paths we can trace with our dance movements in space (front, back, right, left, up, down).

Contextualization

Now you must be wondering, 'why do we need to understand all of this?'. Well, if you have ever watched a dance performance or even a music video, you must have noticed that dancers do not move randomly. They strategically and creatively occupy space. They create paths, patterns, and even stories with their movements and the way they occupy space. This is part of the beauty and expressiveness of dance.

Furthermore, understanding these concepts also helps us in our daily activities. When we participate in team games, for example, the way we move and occupy space can make the difference between winning or losing. Similarly, being able to use the space around us properly helps us avoid accidents and conflicts. Moreover, if you enjoy creating your own choreographies to perform at school talent shows, knowing how to use space will make your dances much more interesting.

I hope you are all excited to explore these ideas and enhance your dance and collaboration skills. Let's dance!

Practical Activity

Activity Title: 'Space Dancers'

Project Objective:

Explore and understand the concept of space in dance through the creation of a group choreography that creatively and consciously uses personal and general space.

Detailed Project Description:

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group will be tasked with creating a short choreography, lasting 2 to 3 minutes, that demonstrates the use of the learned concepts of personal space, general space, orientation in space, and directionality.

Each choreography must tell a story, which can be freely chosen by the students as long as it is suitable for the school. The story must be told solely through the dancers' movements, without dialogue or verbal narrative.

Required Materials:

  • Ample space to rehearse and present the choreography (can be the classroom, the schoolyard, a gymnasium, etc).
  • 1 cell phone or camera to record the final presentation of the choreography (can be the teacher's phone or one of the students').

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:

  1. Group Formation: Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students. Groups can be freely formed by the students.

  2. Concept Review: Together, students should review the concepts of personal space, general space, orientation in space, and directionality.

  3. Story Selection: Each group will choose a story to be told through dance. They can use books, movies, legends, fables, or even create their own stories.

  4. Choreography Creation: Once the story has been chosen, students should think about how to tell that story through dance. They should consider how to use dance movements and space to represent the characters, actions, and feelings of the story.

  5. Rehearsals: Students should practice their choreography several times before the final presentation. During rehearsals, they should think about how they are using space and if they are truly demonstrating the learned concepts.

  6. Final Presentation: When they feel ready, students should present their choreography to the class. The presentation should be recorded.

  7. Group Evaluation: After the presentation, the group should gather and discuss: How did they use space in their dance? Did they manage to tell the story they chose? How did they feel working together? What challenges did they encounter and how did they overcome them?

Delivery Format:

Groups should deliver, after the presentation, the recording of their choreography on a USB drive, as well as a short written report (or drawn, for students who have difficulty writing) containing the answers to the group evaluation questions.

I hope everyone has a lot of fun throughout this project and takes the opportunity to learn more about dance and teamwork! Let's go, class, you can do it!
