Plants are amazing beings and fundamental to our lives. They provide us with food, oxygen to breathe, offer shelter and shade, besides being responsible for the beauty and diversity of nature. But have you ever stopped to think about how they work? Well, just like us, humans, plants also have parts that perform specific functions vital to their survival.
Introduction
In this project, we will study the main parts of plants: Root, Stem, Leaf, Flower, Fruit, and Seed and discover how each of them contributes to the life of the plant.
The Root is the part of the plant that usually stays underground. It is responsible for absorbing the water and nutrients necessary for the plant's survival. In addition, the root also helps the plant to anchor itself in the soil.
The Stem is the part we see above ground that supports the leaves, flowers, and fruits. It also acts as a transport channel, carrying water and nutrients from the root to the rest of the plant and performing the reverse path with the food produced through photosynthesis.
The Leaves are the parts of the plant where photosynthesis occurs, which is the process by which plants produce their own food using sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide.
The Flowers are much more than just beautiful parts of the plant. They have reproductive organs that give rise to seeds after pollination. The Fruits, on the other hand, are structures that form after fertilization and serve to protect the seeds.
And finally, we have the Seed, which carries the embryo of a new plant and is essential for reproduction.
Understanding how each part of the plant functions is essential to better care for our planet. So, let's get our hands dirty and start our adventure through the world of plants?
Practical Activity: "Our Mini Forest"
Project Objective
The objective of this project is to allow students to see up close how a plant grows and structures itself. In addition, they will work in groups, exercising skills such as: communication, time management, creative thinking, and proactivity.
Detailed Project Description
Students will build a "Mini Forest" using bean seeds. During the plant's growth, they will document, observe, and draw the development of the plant's parts. In the end, they should present an illustrated, colorful, and creative report, describing each stage of their plant's growth and the function of the parts that were observed.
Required Materials
- Bean seeds (4 to 5 per group)
- Transparent plastic containers (ice cream tubs, for example)
- Soil
- Water
- Bond paper or drawing notebook
- Colored pencils, crayons, or markers
- Ruler or measuring tape
- Camera or cell phone (with permission and assistance from guardians)
Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

Initially, each group will receive the necessary materials.

Inside the container, students should put a layer of soil approximately 5 cm thick.

Next, they will place the bean seeds, which should be covered with another layer of soil.

Now, students should water their seeds without soaking the soil.

The group should place the container in a location that receives sunlight (not direct) and monitor the plant's growth for a week, watering when necessary.

During this period, students should make daily observations and draw what they are seeing. It is also important to record the plant's height and other interesting observations.

Each stage should be documented with photos (with the help of guardians).

At the end of the week, each group should prepare an illustrated report, describing all stages of the plant's development and the functions of the observed parts.
