Contextualization
Hello, dear explorers of the dance world! In this project, we will dive deep into the universe of 'Dance Codes'. But before we start, it is important that we understand what these codes are and their importance in the world of dance.
Dance codes are like a language used in dance to communicate and convey meanings. Just as in a conversation, we use words and phrases to express our feelings, opinions, and ideas, in dance, we use body movements, facial expressions, and gestures. Each culture has its specific codes, and it is through them that dancers express stories, emotions, and traditions.
But now, you must be wondering, why is it so important to learn about dance codes? Well, understanding these codes allows us not only to appreciate dance but also to comprehend it more deeply. Learning about dance codes enables us to understand the messages and stories that dancers are trying to convey. Furthermore, being able to decipher these codes can help us create our own dances and express our feelings and ideas in a unique and creative way.
Introduction
Dance is one of the oldest forms of artistic and cultural expression of humanity. From ancient peoples to the most modern societies, dance has been used as a tool to communicate, celebrate, and tell stories. Dance is not just a set of body movements, it is a language that reflects the culture, history, and emotions of a people.
Dance codes are key elements in this language. They include aspects such as rhythm, posture, facial expression, movement, among others. Each dance style has a unique set of codes that give it a distinct identity. For example, in classical ballet, dance codes include precise movements, smooth rhythm, and controlled facial expressions. In hip-hop, codes may include more intense movements, fast rhythm, and strong facial and body expression.
In this project, we will explore dance codes from different cultures, understand how they help to communicate stories and feelings, and use this knowledge to create our own dance performances. Additionally, this project will help develop skills such as communication, collaboration, problem-solving, and creative thinking. So, let's embark together on this journey of discovery and expression through dance!
Practical Activity: 'Creating Our Own Dance'
Project Objective
By the end of this project, the goal is for you to be able to:
- Understand the different dance codes from various cultures.
- Improvise and create dance movements in a creative and collaborative way.
- Express stories and emotions through a dance performance.
- Develop socio-emotional skills such as time management, communication, problem-solving, creative thinking, and proactivity.
Detailed Project Description
We will explore 5 dance styles from different cultures: Classical Ballet, Hip-hop, Flamenco Dance, African Dance, and Belly Dance. Each group will study a type of dance and then create their own dance, using the codes learned. To conclude, each group will present the dance created to the whole class.
Additionally, the group will produce a drawing or a model representing the dance codes of their chosen style, thus learning to work with art and dance simultaneously.
Required Materials
- Computer or sound system to play music.
- Spacious area for dance practice.
- Paper, colored pencils, markers, and other drawing materials.
- Recyclable and craft materials for creating the model.
Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution
Part 1: Research and Study (4 hours)
-
Each group will receive a dance style to study. You should look for information about the dance codes assigned to you: the movements, rhythm, expressions, and which feelings or stories they communicate. You can use books or the internet for research.
-
Take notes on what you have learned. This will help you remember the dance codes when creating your performance.
Part 2: Dance Creation (6 hours)
-
Now it's time to create your dance! Remember the codes you have learned. You can practice the movements several times until you feel comfortable.
-
While creating the dance, think of a story or feeling you want to convey with your dance. This will help you choose the right movements and expressions.
Part 3: Drawing and Model (2 hours)
-
With paper and pencils, draw one or more key movements of the dance you studied. Add details to show the specific codes of that dance.
-
Then, using recyclable and craft materials, create a model that represents the environment where your dance is usually performed. Think about the setting, colors, costumes, and everything that is part of the atmosphere of the chosen dance.
Part 4: Presentation (Agreed time)
- Now it's time to show what you have learned! Make a presentation of the dance you created for the class. Remember to tell the story or express the feeling you chose. Finally, show the drawing and the model you made.
Have a lot of fun exploring different cultures through dance and art!
Delivery Format
Each group must deliver:

- Drawing representing a key movement of the dance.
- Model representing the environment where the dance is usually performed.
