Contextualization

People have always been on the move, since the early days of humanity. Mobility is an essential part of our lives, allowing us to explore new territories, establish connections, and fulfill our daily tasks. But have you ever stopped to think about how people and objects move, or how we choose the best paths to get where we want? These are questions that involve Paths of People and Objects.

Introduction

In mathematics, Paths are the representation of a path traveled from one point to another. They can be simple, like going from your home to school, or complex, like the trajectory of a plane through the sky. Paths can be described in terms of distance, direction, and time. They can also be represented in various ways, such as maps, diagrams, or equations.

Paths are an important part of everyday life. They help us navigate the city, travel the world, and even understand history. For example, historians use paths to track the expansion of empires, the migration of peoples, and the spread of ideas.

Another important concept is that of Position. Position is the place where something or someone is at a given moment. It can be described in terms of coordinates, such as latitude and longitude, or in relation to other objects or reference points. Position can also change over time as objects move.

Now, the most challenging part: Paths and Positions in groups. When people or objects move together, their positions and paths are interconnected. Understanding these interconnections is essential to understanding how systems work and how we can manage them effectively.

This leads us to an important application of the concepts of paths and positions: Route Planning. Planning a route involves choosing the best path to reach a specific location. This requires an understanding of how objects move, where they are at a given moment, and how their trajectories intersect. Route planning is a valuable skill, not only for navigating the physical world but also for solving mathematical problems and even for everyday decision-making.

Now that we have a basic understanding of the concepts of paths, positions, and route planning, we are ready to explore these ideas in a practical and fun way!

Practical Activity: "Explorers of Paths and Positions"

Project Objective

In this activity, students will be challenged to become "Explorers of Paths and Positions". They will create and map paths, record positions along the way, and plan routes to reach specific destinations. Additionally, students will also have to work in teams, promoting collaboration and communication.

Project Description

Each group of students will be responsible for creating an "Explorer Board Game". The board will be a large-scale map where positions and paths will be marked. The goal of the game is to have the explorer (a pawn) travel the path drawn on the map, recording positions along the way. The other group members will be responsible for controlling the explorer's position, planning routes, and recording positions.

Required Materials

  • Large paper (cardboard or kraft paper)
  • Colored pens
  • Ruler
  • Die
  • Pawns (can be made with paper or bottle caps)
  • GPS (simulated by students)
  • Logbook (notebook or sheets of paper)

Step by Step

  1. Group Formation: Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students. Each group will be a team of explorers.

  2. Location Selection and Map Creation: Each group will choose a location (it can be a city, a park, the school, etc.) to be the game's setting. They will then draw the map of the location on the large paper. The map should include streets, buildings, squares, and other landmarks.

  3. Definition of Paths and Position Markers: Students must plan at least 3 different paths on the map that the explorer will travel during the game. They must also choose reference points where the explorer will record their position.

  4. Preparation of the Logbook: The group must create a logbook for the explorer. The logbook should have a page for each path, where the explorer will record the positions.

  5. Explorer Game: With the board, die, pawns, and logbook ready, the students are ready to play! They should roll the die to determine how many spaces the explorer will move and then move the pawn accordingly. At each reference point, the explorer must record their position in the logbook. The group should discuss and decide on the best route to reach the next reference point.

  6. Game Presentation: At the end of the activity, each group will present their game to the class. They should explain the rules of the game, the challenges faced, and how they solved the problems.

Throughout the activity, students will practice mathematical concepts such as space and shapes, numbers and operations, as well as develop socio-emotional skills such as communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and problem-solving.
