Mathematics is a discipline that is present in many aspects of our daily lives, even if we don't realize it. Addition and subtraction are two fundamental operations in mathematics and are used in various everyday situations.
Addition is the operation we use to add two or more numbers and find the total quantity. For example, if we have 3 apples and 2 more apples, we can add these numbers to know that we have a total of 5 apples.
On the other hand, subtraction is the operation we use to subtract one number from another and find the difference. For example, if we have 5 apples and eat 2, we can subtract 2 from 5 to find out that we have 3 apples left.
These operations are essential for solving everyday problems, such as counting objects, calculating purchases, dividing quantities, among many others.
Introduction
In our daily lives, we use addition and subtraction in different situations. For example, when shopping, we need to add up the prices of products to know how much we will spend. Similarly, when we receive change, we subtract to check if it is correct.
In mathematics, addition and subtraction are also used to solve more complex problems. They are the basis for the study of other operations, such as multiplication and division. Therefore, it is very important that you understand these operations well, as they are the basis for various other mathematical learnings.
Always remember that mathematics is a discipline learned by doing, so let's get our hands dirty and practice a lot!
Practical Activity: "The Great Mathematical Adventure"
Project Objective
This project aims to provide students with the opportunity to apply in practice the concepts of addition and subtraction of natural numbers, as well as develop socio-emotional skills, such as critical thinking, teamwork, time management, creativity, and problem-solving.
Project Description
Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5, will embark on "The Great Mathematical Adventure". Each group will be assigned to create and present a board game that involves addition and subtraction situations.
Necessary Materials
- Cardboard or cardstock to make the board
- Colored markers
- Die
- Markers (can be coins, bottle caps, bits of paper, etc.)
- Ruler
- Pencil and eraser
Step by Step

Define the Game's Story: Each group must create a story for their game. It can be an adventure in space, a journey through the forest, a trip through time, etc. Creativity is the limit!

Board Construction: Using cardboard or cardstock, students must draw and color the game board. The board should contain numbered squares from 1 to 50 (or more, depending on the size of the board). The board's design should match the story created by the group.

Creation of Cards: The game cards should contain situations involving addition and subtraction of natural numbers. For example, "You found 3 stars, add them to your score" or "The robot stole 5 coins, subtract them from your score". Each situation should be accompanied by a calculation that players must solve.

Game Rules: Students must create the game rules. For example, how players will advance on the board, when they will draw a card, when they will solve an addition or subtraction situation, etc.

Test and Adjust: After completing the game construction, groups must test it. If during testing they realize that any rule or card is unclear, they should make adjustments.

Game Presentation: Finally, each group will present their game to the class. During the presentation, they must explain the game's story, the rules, and how the addition and subtraction situations are resolved.
The games will be presented in the classroom, and all students will have the opportunity to play and learn together!
Delivery Format
Each group must deliver their complete game, including the board, cards, die, and markers, along with a small report (can be handwritten) containing the game's story, rules, and examples of addition and subtraction situations that appear in the game.
