Verbs: Introduction to Simple Present

Introduction

Hello class! We are about to embark on an incredible journey through the wonderful world of verbs, more specifically, we will explore the Simple Present in English. Did you know that verbs are like the backbone of any language? They help us communicate our thoughts, actions, and feelings. Without them, language would be very confusing and limited. So, let's get started?

The first step to understanding the Simple Present is to understand what a verb is. A verb is a word that describes an action, a state, or an occurrence. For example, in 'I play soccer,' the verb 'play' describes the action of playing.

Contextualization

Now, you must be wondering, why do we need to learn about the Simple Present? Well, the Simple Present is the most basic verb tense in English and is used to express habitual actions, general facts, and universal truths. It is like the base of a pyramid, from which we can build more complex verb tenses.

Have you ever thought about how people describe their daily routines? In English, we use the Simple Present. For example, 'I wake up at 7 a.m., have breakfast, and go to school.' Or have you heard someone say 'The sun rises in the east'? That is a universal truth, and we also use the Simple Present to express it.

Now, imagine what it would be like if we didn't know how to use the Simple Present. Our conversations would be very confusing, and it would be difficult to share information about our lives and the world around us. That's why it's so important to learn this verb tense.

I hope you are ready for this journey! By understanding the Simple Present, you will be able to express your ideas much more clearly and confidently. And most importantly, you will have fun while learning! Let's go!

Practical Activity: 'Our Daily Routine' (Nossa Rotina Diária)

Project Objective

This project aims to enhance the understanding and use of the Simple Present in English, as students work in groups to create and present a 'Daily Routine' of a fictional character. The activity also aims to develop socio-emotional skills, such as time management, effective communication, problem-solving, and creative thinking.

Detailed Project Description

Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5, will create a 'Daily Routine Board' based on a fictional character. Each group will describe their character's daily routine, using the Simple Present in English. They will also have to present the board to the class, explaining each action and the tense used.

Required Materials

  • Cardboard or poster board
  • Colored pens, colored pencils, markers
  • Magazines, newspapers (for cutting and pasting, if desired)
  • Glue, scissors (under the supervision of the teacher or an adult)
  • Dictionaries (online or printed)

Detailed Step-by-Step Guide for the Activity

1. Group Formation: The teacher will divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students.

2. Character Creation: Each group will create a fictional character. They must give the character a name and think of characteristics such as age, profession (if any), interests, among others.

3. Routine Description: Next, each group must think about their character's daily routine. They should list the activities the character does on a normal day, from waking up to going to sleep. For example: 'John wakes up at 7 a.m., has breakfast, goes to work, comes back home at 6 p.m., has dinner, watches TV, and goes to bed at 10 p.m.'

4. Use of Simple Present: With the list of activities ready, the groups must write the sentences in English, using the Simple Present. The teacher should be available to help with grammar and vocabulary, if necessary.

5. Creation of the Daily Routine Board: Now, the groups will create the 'Daily Routine Board' of their character. They can use the cardboard or poster board and the colored pens, colored pencils, and markers to make the board colorful and attractive. They can draw the character, the activities he/she does during the day, and write the sentences in English.

6. Presentation to the Class: Finally, each group will present their 'Daily Routine Board' to the class. They must explain each activity and the sentence they used to describe it in English.

Remember, class, you are in this together! Work as a team, help each other, and have fun learning about the Simple Present. I am excited to see everyone's creativity!
