We live in a world full of random and uncertain events, some more likely to happen than others. Have you ever stopped to think about how we can calculate this probability? Or how we choose between a likely and an unlikely action? This is where our today's theme comes in: 'Likely and Unlikely'.

Probability is an area of Mathematics that studies the chances of an event occurring. This field is present in almost everything in our lives, from flipping a coin to predicting the weather. When we say that an event is likely, we are saying that it has a high chance of happening. On the other hand, when we say that something is unlikely, we are saying that it has a low chance of happening.

But how can we quantify these chances? This is what you will learn with this project. Through fun and interactive activities, you will be able to understand how probability works in practice, making connections with real-life situations.

Importance

Probability is an essential part of our daily lives. It is used in various areas such as meteorology, medicine, economics, games, among others. For example, meteorologists use probability to predict the weather, doctors use it to understand the chance of a patient having a disease based on their symptoms, and economists use it to predict possible market trends.

Furthermore, understanding the difference between 'likely' and 'unlikely' can help us make better decisions. For example, if I know that the chance of rain today is very low (unlikely), I probably won't take my umbrella. Understanding probability can help us deal with uncertainty and make more informed decisions.

Activity Title: 'Events Alliance: Probability Mission'

Project Objective

This activity aims for students to understand how to measure the probability of an event occurring, recognizing the most likely and unlikely outcomes in different contexts.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 and will create games involving probability, including a card game, a game with a die, and a coin game. Each group will need to think, plan, and develop a set of rules for each game, always taking into account the probability of events.

Each group will play each of the games a predetermined number of times and record the results. After that, they will evaluate the observed probabilities and compare them with the theoretical probabilities.

Finally, the groups will have to write a detailed document about what they learned through the completion of this project and how the concept of probability applies to real-world situations.

  • Decks of cards
  • Dice
  • Coins
  • Paper and pens

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Divide students into groups of 3 to 5.
  2. Each group must create a card game, a game with a die, and a coin game. The group must establish the rules for each game considering the concept of probability.
  3. Each group plays each of the games a predetermined number of times and records the results.
  4. Based on the results, the groups evaluate the probabilities of the events occurring. They should compare the observed probabilities with the theoretical probabilities.
  5. Students discuss in groups about the concepts of 'likely' and 'unlikely' and how these concepts were applied in the games they created.
  6. Students must prepare a written report detailing their experience.

Students will also need to write a project report that includes the following topics:

  1. Introduction: They must contextualize the probability theme, discuss its relevance and application in the real world, and talk about the project's objective.

  2. Development: They must explain the theory of probability, detail how the games were developed, talk about the methodology they used to calculate the probability, and discuss the results they obtained.

  3. Conclusions: In this topic, they must include what they learned, what they concluded about probability, and how they plan to apply this knowledge in the future.

  4. Bibliography: They must list the sources they consulted for the project.

The activity lasts for one week and aims to allow students to understand probability through practice, teach them to work in teams, and develop useful skills such as time management and creative thinking. Participating students must dedicate two to four hours to carry out the project.
