And that's what we're going to explore in this project!

The materials around us are constantly changing. They can change shape, state, and in some cases, even composition. For example, water can turn into vapor when heated and into ice when cooled. Paper, on the other hand, can break down and become something completely different when burned. These changes are called chemical and physical transformations.

Chemical transformations occur when the material's composition is altered, as in the case of burnt paper, which turns into ashes. Physical transformations, on the other hand, do not alter the material's composition, only its characteristics, as in the case of water changing from liquid to gas without ceasing to be water.

Introduction

In science, we study these transformations to better understand how the world around us works. Scientists use this knowledge to create new materials, develop medications, understand how our bodies function, and much more.

But why is it important for us, children, to understand this? Knowing about transformations helps us better understand what happens to things around us. This can help us make more conscious decisions, such as recycling waste or saving water. Knowing how things transform can also be a lot of fun! We can do experiments and see these changes happen right in front of us.

Practical Activity: "Scientists of Transformations"

Project Objective

The objective of this activity is for you, as "Scientists of Transformations," to explore and document the various ways in which different everyday materials can transform, identifying whether these changes are physical or chemical. In addition, you will develop teamwork, problem-solving, time management, and communication skills.

Project Description

Each group of students will be responsible for selecting 3 common materials (for example: paper, plastic, bread, water, etc.) and conducting different experiments to observe how these materials transform in different situations. You will document these transformations in a "Diary of Transformations" and present your findings to the class.

Required Materials

• 3 everyday materials (for example: paper, plastic, bread, water, etc.)
• Pencils, pens, crayons, or anything else to write with
• Notebook or paper for the "Diary of Transformations"
• Camera or cell phone with a camera (with parental permission) to take photos of the experiments (optional)

Step by Step

1. Material Selection: First, discuss as a group which materials you would like to explore. Remember, you must choose 3 different materials.

2. Experiment Planning: Next, think of different ways to transform these materials. For example, with paper, you can try tearing, wetting, burning, etc. With plastic, you can try heating, freezing, etc.

3. Experiment Execution: Now, it's time to get your hands dirty! Conduct the experiments you planned, but remember to do this under adult supervision. While conducting the experiments, observe closely what happens to the materials. Do they change shape? Color? Do they emit any smell? Write everything down in the "Diary of Transformations." If possible, take photos of the experiments to illustrate your notes.

4. Analysis of Transformations: After conducting the experiments, discuss as a group the transformations you observed. Do you think these changes were physical or chemical? Why?

5. Presentation Preparation: Now, you will prepare a presentation for the class. In the "Diary of Transformations," write a summary of the experiments you did and the transformations you observed. Practice the group presentation, making sure all group members have a chance to speak.

6. Presentation to the Class: Finally, it's time to share your findings with the class! Each group will have the opportunity to present their "Diary of Transformations" and talk about the transformations they observed.
