Hello there! Our new project will be an incredible adventure in which we will learn about and master punctuation, specifically commas and periods. Did you know these little symbols have great power when it comes to writing and giving meaning to our sentences? It’s true! They act like a bridge connecting our thoughts and, if used correctly, they make our texts clearer and easier to understand.
Punctuation marks play a key role in our language: They help us organize our thoughts and share ideas more effectively. For example, commas are used to separate different elements within a sentence or indicate pauses while reading, while periods are placed at the end of sentences. But, have you noticed that periods do more than that? They also help define what kind of sentence is being used, e.g. declarative, interrogative, exclamatory, etc.
Contextualization
Have you ever wondered what it would be like if there were no commas or periods? Our sentences would become a complete mess and it would be really hard to understand what others were trying to tell us, right? This is why it's important to use punctuation marks correctly.
Furthermore, punctuation marks even have the ability to alter the meaning of a sentence, like in “Let’s eat, children” and “Let’s eat children!” In the first example, the comma tells us to call the children over to have a meal with us. In the second example, it seems as though we are telling our kids they will be the meal… Do you notice how punctuation can make such a big difference?

Activity Title: Exploring Punctuation in Fairy Tales
Project Objective
During this project, we’ll immerse ourselves in the enchanting realm of fairy tales and discover the vital role that punctuation plays in telling a good story. We will learn to use commas and periods correctly through playing games, writing, and reading fairy tales. By the end, each group will have created and shared their very own original fairy tale using everything we’ve learned.
Detailed Description of the hands-on Activities
For this project, you’ll work together in teams to explore and develop a deeper understanding of commas and periods. To begin with, there will be some fun games and activities to help solidify these concepts. After that, you will read and analyze a selection of fairy tales, looking at the ways punctuation is being used and the effect it has on the stories being told.
Once you have mastered the art of punctuation, it will be your turn to become authors and pen your own original fairy tales. Each group will write their very own tale while focusing on the correct usage of commas and periods. Of course, we will have a special reading session in the end to share all of your incredible stories!
Necessary Materials
- Fairy tales (either physical copies or digital copies)
- Paper, pencils for taking notes
- Paper, cardboard, or notebooks for writing the fairy tale
- Markers, colored pencils, crayons (for illustrating your story, optional)
- Access to the internet (for research, under the supervision of an adult)
Detailed Step-by-Step Instructions

Divide into Teams: Teachers will divide students into teams of 3 to 5 students each. Teams will be given a list of fairy tales to choose from for reading and analyzing.

Game Time: Each group will rotate through various games and activities that focus on the use of commas and periods. Some examples of these could be card games, board games, or word searches, among others.

Reading and Analyzing the Fairy Tales: Teams will each read and analyze two different fairy tales. While reading, students will pay attention to how punctuation marks are being used and how they impact the stories being told.

Discussion Time: After having finished reading, each team will get together to share their thoughts. They will discuss questions like: “Where were commas and periods used? Why did the author choose place them there?”

Creating a Fairy Tale: Teams will each create an original fairy tale of their own. While writing their stories, they will need to remember to correctly use punctuation. They may draw inspiration from the tales that they previously read.
