Project Objective

This project aims to stimulate critical thinking and understanding about the emergence of cities, as well as to deepen the understanding of the social, cultural, and geographical transformations resulting from this process. At the end of the activity, students should be able to understand and explain the main factors that led to the birth of cities and identify their consequences on society's organization.

Project Description

Each group of students will represent an ancient civilization and will have the goal of designing and building a model of a city from that time. To do this, they must delve into the history and particular characteristics of the chosen civilization such as geographic location, available resources, social structure, and technological advances. After the research, students must plan and build a physical model of their city, as well as prepare a detailed project report.

As it is a group project, it is expected that students share responsibilities and work collaboratively during all stages of the project, developing important socio-emotional skills.

Necessary Materials

• Cardboard, scissors, and glue;
• Painting materials (brushes, paints, etc.);
• Recyclable materials for construction (cardboard boxes, toilet paper rolls, etc.);
• Paper for writing the report;
• Computer with internet access for research.

Step by Step

1. Group Formation and Civilization Choice: Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each group will choose an ancient civilization to represent and study. Some examples could be: Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, etc.

2. Research: Students will research the chosen civilization, focusing on how and why the first cities emerged in that context. They should also understand the urban structure, architecture, and social organization of these cities.

3. Planning: Based on the research, students must plan their city, taking into account aspects such as the positioning of important buildings, access roads, distribution of residential, commercial, and leisure spaces, etc. The city planning should be drawn on paper or digitally.

4. Construction: Students will build the model of their city according to the planning, using the available materials. The city should creatively represent the knowledge acquired in the research.

5. Report: Throughout the project, students must document the process in a report that should contain the following sections:

   • Introduction: In this section, students must present the chosen civilization, explain the relevance of studying the birth of cities, and the project's objective.
   • Development: The research, planning, and construction process of the city should be explained. Students should discuss the results obtained, highlighting the main learnings.
