Cities are much more than just a bunch of buildings and streets. They are the result of centuries of evolution and change. Ancient cities, such as Rome, Athens and Jerusalem, were born thousands of years ago and have a rich history that tells us about the life and customs of the people who lived there. On the other hand, contemporary cities, such as New York, London and Tokyo, are a reflection of the world we live in today, with their advanced technologies, skyscrapers and cultural diversity.

Introduction

Ancient cities generally emerged near rivers, lakes or seas, as water was essential for survival. They were surrounded by walls to protect themselves from enemies and had temples, palaces and markets at their core. Life in these cities was very different from ours, with little technology and a strong influence from religion and politics.

Contemporary cities, on the other hand, are much larger and more complex. They are the center of commerce, industry, culture and politics. In them, we find skyscrapers, roads, airports, parks, museums and an infinity of services and facilities. Life in contemporary cities is hectic and full of challenges, but it also offers many opportunities.

And the most interesting thing is that cities are not static, they are always changing and adapting. The ancient cities that were once the center of the world are now just ruins, while new cities are emerging and becoming the new centers of power and influence.

Practical Activity: "City of the Past, City of the Future"

Project Objective

The goal of this project is for students to better understand the differences between ancient and contemporary cities, and how changes in society and technology have influenced the evolution of cities. In addition, group work will develop essential skills such as communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity.

Project Description

Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5, will create two city models, one representing an ancient city and the other representing a contemporary city. The models should be made of recyclable materials, encouraging sustainability and creativity.

Groups will have to research ancient and contemporary cities, including aspects such as location, architecture, economy, society, politics and culture. Research should be done in depth, using different sources of information such as books, the internet and interviews.

Required Materials

• Cardboard boxes or other recyclable materials for the city base.
• Cardstock, papier-mâché or modeling clay for modeling buildings.
• Paints, colored pens, colored pencils, crayons, etc. for decoration.
• Scissors, glue, tape, etc. for assembly.

Step by Step

1. Group Formation - The teacher will form groups of 3 to 5 students and explain the project in detail.

2. Research on Ancient and Contemporary Cities - Each group will have to research an ancient city and a contemporary city. They should find out about the location, history, architecture, economy, society, politics and culture of these cities.

3. Model Planning - Based on their research, the groups should plan what their city models will look like. They should think about how they will represent the different aspects researched, such as buildings, streets, rivers, mountains, etc.

4. Model Creation - Using recyclable materials, the groups will build their city models. They should remember that ancient and contemporary cities are different, so the models should reflect these differences.

5. Model Presentation - After completing their models, each group will give a presentation to the class, explaining what they learned about ancient and contemporary cities during the process. They should also highlight the main differences and similarities between the two cities represented in their models.

6. Model Exhibition - The city models will be exhibited in the classroom, allowing all students to appreciate their classmates' work and learn even more about ancient and contemporary cities.
