Classification of Angles by Their Opening

Context

Angles are a vital part of geometry, a branch of mathematics that studies shapes and their spatial relationships. When two lines intersect or a line bends, an angle is formed. Depending on the amount of rotation between the two lines, angles can vary in size and are usually measured in degrees.

To identify angles, it is important to understand that they are formed by the meeting of two lines or line segments. Angles are a measure of the rotation that has taken place and are classified into different types, such as acute angles, obtuse angles, right angles, and more. Learning to identify and classify angles correctly is essential for studying shapes and solving geometry problems.

Understanding the concept of angles allows us to better understand and interact with the physical world. From architecture and engineering to sports and art, the concept of angles is essential for many human activities. For example, throwing a ball at a specific angle can determine how far it will travel, while in the construction of a building, angles must be carefully calculated to ensure the stability of the structure.

Angles are also of great importance in other disciplines, besides mathematics. In physics, for example, they are used to calculate the velocity and direction of a moving object. In geography, they help to understand the movement of the sun and the climatic zones of the earth. In everyday life, we recognize and use angles without realizing it, such as when driving, moving, or even drawing.

Understanding and identifying angles is a fundamental skill that will be applied in various disciplines and life situations. Therefore, this project will focus not only on teaching the theory of angles but also on how they are practically used and applied in the real world.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Angle Hunt

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to encourage understanding of angles in a fun and interactive way. By going on an angle hunt around everyday objects, students will be able to identify and classify the angles they find.

Detailed Project Description

This project will be carried out by groups of 3 to 5 students and should last around two to four hours. Participants will be challenged to search their homes or school for objects that form angles. The exercise will not only help in identifying different angles, but will also encourage observation and awareness of how angles are present in everyday life.

Materials Required

  • Cameras (from a cell phone or tablet)
  • Paper
  • Pens or colored pencils

Detailed step-by-step instructions for the activity

  1. First, students should meet in their groups and discuss what they have learned about angles. Each member of the group should share their ideas on where they think they can find angles in their home or school.
  2. Next, students should, under adult supervision, go on an "angle hunt", where they will photograph objects they believe form angles.
  3. The photos should be printed or drawn on paper. Below each photo or drawing, students should write what type of angle they believe the object forms (right, acute, obtuse, etc.).
  4. The team should meet again to discuss their findings. They should compare the photos and discuss why they believe each object forms the angle they identified.
  5. Finally, each group must present to the class the angles they found, explaining why they believe each photo represents the identified angle.

Project deliverables

Students will be required to submit a report on the activity carried out. The report should be divided into 4 parts:

  1. Introduction: Contextualization of the theme, explaining the relevance of angles and their application in everyday life. Students should also include the objective of the project.

  2. Development: Students should detail the theory of angles, explaining the activity carried out, the methodology used, and presenting the results obtained.

  3. Conclusion: Students should conclude the work by revisiting their main points, explaining the lessons learned, and the conclusions drawn about the project.

  4. Bibliography: Students should list the sources they used to work on the project, such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

The purpose of this written deliverable is to complement what was worked on in a practical way in the activity. Thus, students will be able to articulate the theory learned in the classroom with the practice observed in the activity. In addition, they will be encouraged to develop socio-emotional skills such as communication, problem solving, and creative thinking.
