Introduction
Shapes are all around us, whether in the form of objects, buildings, nature, or even in musical notes! In mathematics, we study these shapes, which helps us better understand the world we live in. And that is a lot of fun!
There are different types of shapes, such as circle, square, rectangle, triangle, among many others. Each of them has unique properties that make them special. Some are curves, others are straight, some have equal sides, others have different sides.
Importance
Understanding the properties of shapes is essential because it allows us to classify, compare, identify, and even draw or build similar shapes. Furthermore, the study of shapes is the basis for many mathematical concepts, such as geometry, which is a very important part of mathematics.
Knowledge of the properties of shapes is also useful in many other areas, such as physics, engineering, architecture, design, among others. For example, when an engineer or an architect needs to design a building, they need to understand the properties of shapes so that the building is safe and functions correctly.

Practical Activity: 'Shapes in Nature and Art'
Project Objective
The objective of this project is for you, young mathematicians, to explore and identify different properties of shapes found in nature and art. Additionally, we want you to develop teamwork, communication, and time management skills.
Project Description
You, in groups of 3 to 5 students, will be 'shape hunters'! Each group will have the task of exploring the environment around them, whether in nature or in art, and finding as many different shapes as possible. You should describe the properties of each shape found and record your discoveries in an illustrated portfolio.
Necessary Materials
- Notebook or paper for notes
- Colored pencils, markers, and/or crayons
- Ruler
- Camera (optional, to record the shapes found)
- Internet access (for research, if necessary)
Step by Step

Forming Groups: First, form groups of 3 to 5 students. Remember that collaboration and communication are essential for the project's success!

Choosing the Environment: Decide whether you will explore the nature around the school or visit an art gallery or museum in the city. You can also explore art on the internet if it is not possible to visit a physical location.

Hunting Shapes: Now comes the fun part! Start exploring the chosen environment and look for different shapes. Remember that shapes can be found in plants, animals, landscapes, sculptures, paintings, drawings, etc.

Describing the Shapes: For each shape found, draw it in your notebook or paper and describe its properties: how many sides does it have, are the sides all equal? Does it have curves or is it all straight? And so on.

Recording Discoveries: At the end of each day of shape hunting, take some time to organize your discoveries. You can do this in the form of an illustrated portfolio, where you recorded the shapes found and their descriptions. If you prefer, you can use the camera to photograph the shapes and then print or paste them in the portfolio.

Preparing the Presentation: Finally, each group should prepare a short presentation to share their discoveries with the class. During the presentation, explain the properties of the shapes you found and show the illustrated portfolio.
