Understanding decimal numbers is a fundamental skill in the study of mathematics. These numbers are used to express quantities that are not whole numbers, and their understanding is closely related to various everyday concepts, such as money, for example. Another important application of decimal numbers is in the representation of measurements, such as weight, length, volume, among others.
Decimal numbers are a constant tool in various professions, from engineers to cooks, musicians to scientists. They are used for all types of calculations and measurements. Furthermore, knowledge of the decimal form of rational numbers helps to understand the structure of our numbering system, the basis of any mathematical calculation.
Studying decimal numbers provides the opportunity to explore a wide range of knowledge because it connects with other disciplines and areas of teaching, such as Physics and Geography. For example, studying temperature measurements can lead to learning about decimal numbers, as well as analyzing maps and understanding longitude and latitude.
Practical Activity: 'From Two Cents to Millions'
Project Objective
This project aims to concretely explore in a practical and interactive way the decimal numbering system and the relationship between decimal places. Each group will be responsible for setting up a 'School Bank' to carry out transactions using a fictional currency, providing the opportunity to understand decimal numbers in a practical and meaningful scenario: the monetary system. In addition, the project will include cross-curricular activities, involving the History discipline, where students will be encouraged to research the origin of money and the evolution of the monetary system.
Detailed Project Description
Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5, will have to set up their 'School Bank'. They will create their own fictional currency (with the name they desire) and will have to define the values of the notes and coins of that currency, ensuring that there is representation of units, tenths, hundredths, and thousandths.
They will carry out transactions among themselves and record all movements made, creating an authentic work experience in a bank. In this way, students will be able to observe the importance of decimal numbers in practice, learning to read, write, add, subtract, and order these numbers.
In addition, each group should research and prepare a presentation on the origin of money in humanity, the evolution of the monetary system, and the importance of decimal numbers in this context.

Step by Step

Creation of Fictional Currency: Each group must create their own fictional currency, draw the notes and coins on cardboard paper, and cut them out.

Bank Transactions: Students will make transactions among themselves, recording all movements. They must ensure that all operations are correct and that the final balance of the bank is correct.

Historical Research: In parallel with the practical activity, students should research the origin of money and the evolution of the monetary system, relating this to the importance of decimal numbers. Each group should prepare a presentation on the topic.

Final Report: At the end of the project, students will write a report containing the Introduction (contextualization of the theme and project objective), Development (theory of decimal numbers, detailed description of activities carried out, methodology used, and results obtained), Conclusions (summary of the main points and conclusions about the project), and Bibliography used.
Project Deliverables
The project will culminate in the delivery of a final report, which must cover all the aforementioned points. Students' ability to discuss the theory of decimal numbers and their applicability in real situations will be evaluated, as well as their ability to document and present the results obtained.
Groups will also be evaluated based on the presentation of historical research, considering the relevance of the information presented, the ability to establish connections between theory and practice, and the ability to argue and communicate.
