The study of probability is a fundamental part of mathematics and has many real-world applications. From weather forecasting to business decisions, probability plays a crucial role. In this project, we will explore the concept of 'Possible Results', an essential element in any probability study.

Introduction

Probability refers to the measure of the chance of a particular event occurring. This event could be anything - like flipping a coin and getting heads, or rolling a die and getting an even number. However, to understand probability, we first need to understand the concept of 'Possible Results'. Possible Results are all the possible outcomes of an event.

For example, if we flip a coin, the possible results are Heads or Tails. If we roll a die, the possible results are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6. It is important to understand that the possible results must cover all possible occurrences of the event. We cannot leave any result out.

Contextualization and Relevance

This project is important because it helps us understand how probability is applied in our daily lives. For example, if you are playing a game with dice, understanding the possible results and the chances of each one occurring can help you make better and more informed decisions in the game. Similarly, in a more commercial or business context, if you understand the chances of different events occurring, you can make more informed and potentially more profitable decisions.

On a more personal level, understanding probability and possible results can help us better understand the world around us. For example, if we know that the chance of rain tomorrow is 20%, we can make a more informed decision about whether we should take an umbrella or not.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Marathon of Possible Results

Project Objective

The objective of this activity is for students to become familiar with the concept of possible results and its application in the real world. Students will work as a team to carry out a series of experiments and record all possible results.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5. Each group will receive a list of different experiments to carry out and report the possible results. The list will include simple experiments, such as flipping a coin, rolling a die, drawing a card from a deck, etc.

Students will need to carry out each experiment several times and record all possible results in a table. They will also have to make an estimate of whether the results are equally likely or not and provide a justification for their estimates.

Required Materials

  1. Coins
  2. Dice
  3. Deck of cards
  4. Paper and pens/pencils
  5. Graph notebook

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5.
  2. Each group will receive a list of experiments to carry out. The experiments will be simple and safe to be done in the classroom.
  3. Students will carry out each experiment several times and record all possible results in a table. The record should clearly indicate what was done, what results were observed, and how many times each result occurred.
  4. Students should make an estimate of whether the results are equally likely or not and provide a justification for their estimates.
  5. At the end of the activity, each group will be responsible for presenting their findings to the class. This should be done through a short oral presentation, where they will explain what they did, what results they obtained, and what conclusions they drew from their experiences.

Deliverables

Groups must submit a written report detailing their experiments, results, and interpretations. The report should be structured as follows:

  1. Introduction: Students must contextualize the theme, explaining its relevance and application in the real world, as well as the objective of this project.

  2. Development: Students must explain the theory behind possible results, detail the experiments, indicate the methodology used, and finally present and discuss the results obtained.

  3. Conclusion: Students must conclude the work by summarizing their main points, explaining the learnings obtained, and the conclusions drawn about the project.

  4. Bibliography: Students must indicate all sources they relied on to carry out the project, such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

The report should be presented according to the ABNT standard for school papers. It will be evaluated for clarity, accuracy, representation of results, and conclusions drawn. Additionally, the report should reflect a joint effort from all group members.
