Contextualization

Hello, young mathematicians! Have you ever stopped to think about how Mathematics is present in our daily lives, even if we don't realize it? An example of this is graphs, which we see in magazines, newspapers, books, and even on the internet. They are visual representations of data that help us understand and interpret information in a much simpler and faster way.

Now, imagine if we could create our own graphs, representing information that interests us, such as the games we like to play the most, the books we enjoy reading the most, the sports we prefer to practice the most? That would be amazing, wouldn't it? And that's exactly what we are going to do in this project!

Graphs can be of various types: bar, table, line, and image. Each of them serves to represent different types of data in a more visual and organized way. The bar graph, for example, is widely used to compare quantities. The table is great for organizing information in an easy-to-read way. The line graph, in turn, is perfect for showing data that changes over time. And the image graph, which may be the most fun of all, uses images to represent the data.

But don't worry, even if it seems difficult, with a little effort and teamwork, all of you will be able to do it. Furthermore, this project will allow you to apply mathematical concepts such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in a practical and fun way. So, are you ready to embark on this mathematical adventure? Let's go!

Practical Activity: "Our Interests in Graphics"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is for groups of students to create graphs (bar, table, line, and image) to represent information of their interest, such as favorite games, most read books, most practiced sports, favorite pets, among others. In addition, students must present a report explaining how they built the graphs and how they interpreted the information represented by them.

Project Description

Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5 members, will choose a theme of their interest to collect data. For example, a group can choose the theme "Favorite Games" and collect information about the games each group member likes to play the most.

After collecting the data, students will build four types of graphs to represent this information: bar graph, table, line, and image. Each type of graph should represent the same information, but in different ways.

Finally, students must create a report explaining how they collected the data, how they built the graphs, and how they interpreted the information represented by them. The report must be written as a group, and each member must contribute their ideas.

Required Materials

  • Cardboard or cardstock
  • Bond paper
  • Ruler
  • Colored pencils
  • Blunt scissors
  • Glue
  • Magazines, newspapers, or printed images (for the image graph)

Step by Step

  1. Theme Selection and Data Collection: The group must choose a theme of interest (favorite games, books read, sports practiced, etc.) and each member must collect information on this theme. For example, if the theme is "Favorite Games", each member must list the top 3 games they like to play.

  2. Building the Graphs: After collecting the data, students must build the four types of graphs to represent the information. For the bar graph, students can draw rectangles on cardboard or cardstock, one for each data, and then color according to the quantity. For the table, students must draw lines and columns on bond paper and fill in with the collected information. The line graph can be drawn on bond paper, with the data represented by points, which are then connected by lines. And finally, for the image graph, students must cut out images related to the theme from magazines, newspapers, or prints and paste them on bond paper.

  3. Interpreting the Graphs: After building the graphs, students must interpret the information represented by them. For example, if in the bar graph the rectangle referring to a game is larger than the others, it means that this is the favorite game of the majority of the group.

  4. Report Development: Finally, students must prepare a report explaining step by step how they collected the data, how they built the graphs, and how they interpreted the information. The report must be written as a group, and each member must contribute their ideas.

Remember, the most important thing is to have fun learning mathematics!

Delivery Format

Students must submit the handwritten report, accompanied by the constructed graphs. The report must contain the name of each group member and the delivery date. The graphs must also be identified with the chosen theme and the type of graph they represent. The deadline for submission is one week from the start of the project.
