Context

Mathematics is a science that is present in all stages of our lives. In this project, we will explore a fascinating and fundamental topic: the conversion between fractions and decimal numbers. But before diving into the practical activity, it is important to understand some theoretical concepts.

A fraction is a way to represent a division or a proportion between two numbers, namely the numerator (which indicates the quantity we are considering) and the denominator (which shows the total number of equal parts into which a whole is divided). Decimal numbers, on the other hand, are another way to represent a number that is not whole, through the decimal point.

The conversion between fractions and decimal numbers is an essential skill in mathematics, as it allows us to compare and manipulate different types of numbers more efficiently. For example, we can have fractions of a cake, of a batch, or decimals of a race or in the supermarket bill.

Importance

Understanding these concepts is vital not only for mathematics but for many real-world applications. For example, when dividing a pizza among friends, calculating discounts on a purchase, or measuring distances, the ability to convert between fractions and decimals is fundamental. Furthermore, this skill prepares you for more advanced mathematical concepts in the future, such as ratios, proportions, and percentages.

In economics, for instance, you may encounter situations where the price of a product is given in fractions and you need to convert it to a decimal to compare it to other prices. In sciences, conversion may be necessary to change units of measurement. In technology, you may even encounter fractions and decimals in programming codes!

Practical Activity: "The Candy Store"

Project Objective

The main objective of this project is to reinforce students' understanding of how to convert fractions and decimal numbers in a playful and engaging way. The group work aims to develop time management, communication, problem-solving, creative thinking, and proactivity skills.

Detailed Project Description

In the "Candy Store," each group of 3 to 5 students will have to solve challenges of converting fractions and decimals. Each group will own a Candy Store that has candies priced in fractions and decimals. They will receive customers (teacher and classmates) who will place orders and ask specific questions that will require them to convert fractions and decimals.

Required Materials

  • Pencils, pens, and erasers.
  • Colored papers and cardboards to prepare the store, the candy list, and the prices.
  • Calculators (optional).

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Each group must create the identity of their Candy Store, with a name, logo, and creative visualization.
  2. Each store has a list of candies to sell. The groups must list at least 10 different candies with prices in both fractions and decimals.
  3. The teacher and students will visit the stores, where each customer (can also be a colleague from another group) will place an order and ask questions whose answer requires the conversion from fractions to decimals and vice versa.
  4. Each group must record all sales and conversions, as well as the questions and answers in the form of a store diary.
  5. The project must be completed in one month, and each student must dedicate between 5 and 10 hours to the project.

Project Deliverables

At the end, students must deliver:

  • The visual presentation of the "Candy Store" with the list of candies and their prices.
  • The store diary with the record of sales and conversions made.
  • A project report, which should have the following sections:
  1. Introduction: In this section, students must contextualize the importance of the conversion between fractions and decimal numbers, using real-world examples, such as those found in the Candy Store activity.

  2. Development: Here, students must explain the theory of converting fractions and decimals. Then, describe the Candy Store activity, indicate the challenges they faced, the questions that were asked, and the answers (conversions) they gave. The methodology used should also be reported, such as how they organized themselves, who did what, how they divided tasks, how they managed time, etc.

  3. Conclusions: Students must summarize the main points of the project, what they learned, which skills they developed, and what they concluded from the project. They can also indicate which challenges they encountered and how they overcame them, and what they would do differently.

  4. Bibliography: Here, students must list all sources they used to deepen the concept of fractions and decimals, prepare the store, and write the report.

Note that the final delivery will be both the report and the practical activity with the Candy Store. Thus, both mathematical and socio-emotional skills will be worked on and evaluated.
