Context

Mathematics is an extremely powerful and useful discipline that allows us to examine and understand the world in new and creative ways. At the heart of this discipline lies the concept of 'Possible Outcomes.' This concept is vital for understanding many areas of mathematics, including probability, statistics, and game theory.

Essentially, 'Possible Outcomes' refer to all the different ways a specific event or situation could potentially occur. For example, when rolling a die, there are six 'Possible Outcomes' - you could roll any number from one to six.

The ability to identify and understand all the 'Possible Outcomes' of a situation is key to solving many complex mathematical problems. It is also a very useful skill in many other areas of life, from making strategic business decisions to predicting future events in meteorology and politics.

Regarding its relevance in the real world, the theory of 'Possible Outcomes' is used in a variety of fields. In engineering, for example, engineers use probabilistic models to predict the possible outcomes of their projects and prepare for them. In epidemiology, scientists use 'Possible Outcomes' to predict the spread of diseases and plan prevention strategies. In finance, 'Possible Outcomes' are used to model market behavior and make investment predictions.

Furthermore, the theory of 'Possible Outcomes' is equally crucial in our daily lives. When deciding which route to take to school, for example, we consider different possible outcomes (such as traffic, weather, etc.) to choose the best path.

Practical Activity: 'World of Possible Outcomes!'

Project Objective

The objective of this activity is to apply the theory of 'Possible Outcomes' in a fun and realistic scenario, allowing students to directly experience the concepts they are learning. At the same time, they will develop important technical and socio-emotional skills, such as collaboration, communication, and time management.

Project Description

In this project, groups of 3 to 5 students will create and conduct a mathematical 'Fair Game,' where they will design different games involving 'Possible Outcomes.' The games can range from simple coin tosses to more complex scenarios, such as a multi-step guessing game.

This project will span a period of 2 to 3 weeks and will be divided into 3 phases: Planning, Execution, and Analysis.

Required Materials

  1. Paper and pens for project planning and documentation.
  2. Various resources for game creation (dice, cards, assorted objects...) depending on the game created by the group.
  3. Computer or tablet for research and project documentation.

Step by Step

  1. Planning (6 hours): In this phase, students will design the game. They should consider the different 'Possible Outcomes' and how they relate to the game rules. The group should then document their plan, including a game description, the anticipated 'Possible Outcomes,' and the game rules.

  2. Execution (4 hours): Here, the groups will actually create the game using the materials at their disposal. Once the game is ready, they will conduct it, with each group member having the chance to play at least once.

  3. Analysis (2 hours): Finally, the groups will analyze the results of the game they conducted. They will compare the actual results with the 'Possible Outcomes' they had predicted and discuss possible reasons for any discrepancies.

After the three phases, each group should then write a detailed project report.

Deliverables

  1. Project Report: The report should have four main sections, as described in the project introduction. In the introduction section, students will contextualize the project and explain the relevance of 'Possible Outcomes.' In the development part, they will detail the theory behind 'Possible Outcomes,' describe the game they created and the methodology they used to conduct it, and present the results they obtained. In the conclusion, they will summarize the main points of the project, discuss what they learned, and reflect on the experience. Finally, in the bibliography, they will list the sources consulted during the project.

  2. Created Game: The game itself, whether a physical board, a set of written rules, or even a digital game, will also be an important deliverable. It will allow students to demonstrate their practical understanding of 'Possible Outcomes.'

  3. Oral Presentation: Each group will make a brief presentation to the class, explaining their game and discussing the 'Possible Outcomes.' This will allow them to practice their communication skills and receive direct feedback from their peers and teacher.

This activity, in addition to addressing 'Possible Outcomes,' will also integrate other mathematical topics such as counting, fundamental counting principle, probability, etc. It will also involve skills from other disciplines, such as writing and oral presentation.
