Main Phases of the Moon

Introduction

Hi there, dear knowledge astronauts! Are you ready to embark on a space voyage of discoveries about the Moon? Let's go!

Our Moon is a constant companion, observed and admired by us earthlings. It influences the tides, serves as a guide for navigators, and is a source of inspiration for poets and artists. But did you know that it is not always the same? It goes through different phases, which we can observe with the naked eye.

The Moon does not produce its own light, it only reflects the light of the Sun. However, the relative position of the Sun, Earth, and Moon at different times causes us to see the Moon in different ways. And these different ways in which the Moon appears throughout a month are called Moon Phases.

Definition

The phases of the Moon are divided into four main ones: New Moon, First Quarter Moon, Full Moon, and Last Quarter Moon. The New Moon is when we cannot see the Moon in the sky because it is between the Earth and the Sun and the face that reflects sunlight is facing away from us. In the Full Moon, the face of the Moon that reflects sunlight is facing the Earth, therefore, we can see it fully illuminated.

Between the New Moon and the Full Moon, the First Quarter Moon and the Last Quarter Moon occur. In the First Quarter Moon, we see half of the Moon illuminated, while in the Last Quarter Moon, we also see half of the Moon, but with the illuminated part opposite to that of the First Quarter Moon.

Now, let's understand how these phases happen and how they relate to the Moon's translation movement around the Earth. The Moon takes about 29.5 days to complete a cycle of phases, from New Moon to New Moon, and it performs this movement while the Earth rotates around the Sun. It is this synchronized movement that allows us to see the phases of the Moon.

Understanding the phases of the Moon is fundamental to understand several natural phenomena that occur on Earth, such as the tides and the duration of the day and night. Furthermore, knowing the Moon and its phases is an incredible way to explore the universe and broaden our vision of the world. Ready for this space adventure?

Hands-on Activity: "Exploring the Phases of the Moon"

Project Goal

To understand and visualize the phases of the Moon, from daily observations, by building a three-dimensional model of our natural satellite.

Project Description

This project consists of, in groups of 3 to 5 students, accompanying the phases of the Moon for a month and, at the end, creating a three-dimensional representation of the phases of the Moon using recyclable materials. Students will have to write down the observed phases of the Moon, at what time they occurred and what the characteristics of each phase are.

Materials Needed

  1. Notebook and pencil for annotations
  2. Cardstock or cardboard
  3. Cotton
  4. Styrofoam ball (medium size)
  5. Gouache or acrylic paint (white, gray, black, yellow)
  6. Glue
  7. Blunt-tipped scissors
  8. Barbecue stick

Step by Step

  1. Preparation: Each group should receive a notebook to write down the observations. Students should understand that the Moon is not visible all day long and that it is not always possible to see it, due to the Earth's translation movement.

  2. Observation: For a month, students should observe the Moon every night, always at the same time. They should draw the appearance of the Moon in their notebook, write down the date and time of the observation.

  3. Analysis: After the observations, the students should, together, analyze the drawings and annotations. They should try to identify the phases of the Moon and the changes that occur throughout the month.

  4. Modeling: Now, it's time to build the three-dimensional model of the Moon! First, take the Styrofoam ball and attach it to the barbecue stick, forming a kind of "lollipop".

  5. Painting: Then, with the help of your colleagues, paint the Styrofoam ball to represent the different phases of the Moon. Remember the observations and annotations made in the notebook!

  6. Assembly: Finally, attach the "lollipop" to the cardstock or cardboard, and glue cotton around it to represent the stars. Now, you have a beautiful three-dimensional model of the phases of the Moon!

Project Delivery

Each group will have to present their three-dimensional model of the Moon to the class, explaining the phases of the Moon and how they observed them throughout the month. In addition, they must deliver the notebook with the drawings and observations made.
