Contextualization

Our body is like a big city, with various functions and interconnected systems working in harmony to make everything possible. The circulatory system is like this city's transportation network, responsible for delivering oxygen, nutrients, and hormones to every cell, and for taking carbon dioxide and other waste materials out of the body.

This system is composed of three main parts: the heart, blood vessels, and blood. The heart is like a central station, pumping blood throughout the body. Blood vessels are the roads through which blood travels, taking everything cells need and removing what is no longer necessary. Blood, in turn, is the vehicle that carries oxygen, nutrients, and hormones, and also transports carbon dioxide and other waste products.

In this project, we will explore the circulatory system in more depth, understanding how it works and why it is so important for our survival.

Theoretical Introduction

To understand the circulatory system, it is important to know that it is divided into two parts: the systemic circulation, which carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body, and the pulmonary circulation, which carries blood from the heart to the lungs to be oxygenated.

The heart, the main organ of the system, is a muscle responsible for pumping blood throughout the body. It is divided into four chambers: two atria (upper) and two ventricles (lower). The function of the atria is to receive blood that arrives at the heart, while the ventricles are responsible for pumping blood out of the heart.

Blood, in turn, is composed of different types of cells and substances. Red blood cells, or erythrocytes, carry oxygen. White blood cells, or leukocytes, are responsible for the body's defense against disease. Platelets help blood clot, and plasma, which is the liquid part of blood, carries hormones, nutrients, and waste products.

In this complex and interesting system, we will understand how everything works together, allowing us to live and carry out our daily activities.

Practical Activity: "Journey through the circulatory system"

Project Objective

The objective of the project is to build an interactive three-dimensional model of the circulatory system. By creating this model and working with it, students will be able to better understand how the circulatory system works and how its components interact.

Project Description

Students should divide into groups of 3 to 5 members and create a 3D model of the circulatory system using recyclable materials. In addition, they should develop an explanatory presentation script about the circulatory system, which will be presented along with the model.

Materials Required

  • Cardboard
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Colored pens
  • Paints and brushes
  • Toilet paper tubes
  • Colored paper
  • Yarn or string

Step-by-Step

  1. The first step is to draw the heart and the main blood vessels on a piece of cardboard, to form the base of the model.
  2. Cut out the drawn parts and paint each one with the corresponding colors (red for arteries, blue for veins). Don't forget to paint the heart!
  3. Using toilet paper tubes, create three-dimensional structures representing the heart and blood vessels.
  4. Cut pieces of yarn or string to represent blood and glue them to the model.
  5. Finish the model by painting in the details, such as the capillaries and the types of cells present in the blood.
  6. With the model built, each group should develop an explanatory presentation script about the circulatory system, in a clear and objective way, to present to the class.

Project Deliverables

In addition to the three-dimensional model, each group must submit a written report and give an oral presentation to the class.

The report should follow the guidelines below:

  1. Introduction: In this section, students should contextualize the theme, commenting on the importance and application of the circulatory system in the real world. In addition, they should mention the objective of the project.
  2. Development: Here students should detail how the three-dimensional model was built, step by step, including the materials used. They should also explain the theory about the circulatory system, explaining its components and functions. The methodology used for the elaboration of the model and the project should also be detailed, as well as the challenges and solutions encountered during the execution.
  3. Conclusions: In this section, students should summarize the main points of the project, present the lessons learned, and the conclusions reached with the project.
  4. Bibliography: Here, students should list all the references used to carry out the project, such as books, websites, videos, among others.

The oral presentation should be incisive, clear, and objective, where each member of the group should speak and explain a component of the circulatory system through the model created.

The project should be completed within a month, where each student should play an active role in all stages, from the construction of the model to the preparation of the report and the final presentation.
