The phases of the Moon are the different appearances it presents during its translational movement around the Earth. They are determined by the position of the Moon in relation to the Sun and the Earth. These phases are very important because they help us understand a little more about our universe and how celestial bodies move.

Importance of the Theme

Understanding the phases of the Moon is essential to comprehend various natural phenomena that occur on Earth. For example, have you heard about tides? They are influenced by the Moon and the Sun, and understanding the phases of the Moon helps us better understand tides.

Practical Activity: 'Lunar Cycle in Motion'

Project Objective

The objective of this project is that, through a practical activity, students can understand the phases of the Moon, the translational movement of the Moon around the Earth, and the influence of the Sun in this process. Additionally, it aims to develop socio-emotional skills such as teamwork, communication, problem-solving, time management, and creative thinking.

Detailed Project Description

In this activity, students will form groups of 3 to 5 participants. Each group will be responsible for creating a 'Model of Phases of the Moon in Motion' using simple materials such as paper, colored pencils, and a barbecue stick. Each phase of the Moon will be represented by a drawing made on paper and glued to the stick. The model will be used to simulate the translational movement of the Moon around the Earth.

  • Sheets of paper
  • Colored pencils
  • Blunt scissors
  • Glue
  • Barbecue stick
  • Adhesive tape

Project Step-by-Step

  1. Preparatory Study: Each group should study the different phases of the Moon and how they occur. The teacher will provide study materials (books, videos, websites) to assist in this research.

  2. Model Planning: Based on the study conducted, the group should plan how to represent each phase of the Moon in the model. Each phase of the Moon should be drawn on a piece of paper, cut out, and glued to the barbecue stick. The drawing should be as faithful as possible to the appearance of the Moon in that phase.

  3. Model Construction: After planning, the group will start building their model. Each phase of the Moon will be represented by a drawing on the barbecue stick. The sequence of phases must be respected so that when moving the stick, it is possible to see the complete cycle of Moon phases.

  4. Model Testing: Once built, the group will test to see if the model correctly represents the phases of the Moon. For this, the barbecue stick must be moved to simulate the translational movement of the Moon around the Earth. The group should carefully observe the changes in the appearance of the Moon during the movement.

  5. Model Presentation: Each group will present their model to the class, explaining how the phases of the Moon are represented and how the translational movement is simulated. During the presentation, students should share what they have learned about the phases of the Moon and its cycle.

  6. Project Documentation: Each group will document their project, describing the process of building the model, the difficulties faced, and what they learned from the activity. The documentation can be done in writing, in the form of a report, or through drawings and notes.

In the end, all models and documentation will be gathered in a 'Moon Phases Wall', which will be displayed in the classroom. The wall will be a way to review the content studied and share the learning with the school community.
