Digestive System

Context

The digestive system is an incredible 'machine' that our body has to transform the food we consume into nutrients necessary to keep us alive and fully functioning. Perhaps you are not aware, but from the moment you start chewing food, a series of processes begin to occur in your body. The food is mixed with saliva, goes down the esophagus, reaches the stomach where it is mixed with other 'ingredients' and follows its path to the intestines. There, it will be 'digested' and the nutrients it contains will be absorbed by our body.

But what if I told you that this is just the tip of the iceberg? The digestive system is more complex than it seems. In addition to transforming food into nutrients, it has a series of other important functions, such as the production of enzymes and hormones, maintaining the population of beneficial bacteria in our intestines, and even protecting our body against some types of diseases. And these are just a few examples!

The digestive system is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating parts of the human body. Understanding it better not only helps us to better understand how our body works but can also provide valuable information about our health and well-being.

Introduction

Now that you have learned a little about the digestive system, let's explore it even further. During this project, you and your group will have the opportunity to investigate how this system works and what its main functions are.

Through a series of practical and fun activities, you will learn more about the role of the digestive system in nourishing our bodies, be able to create a balanced menu considering the nutrients and calories necessary for the proper functioning of our organism, and also get to know in detail the main components of the digestive system and their functions.

This project will challenge you not only to deepen your knowledge in science but also to work as a team, manage your time, communicate your ideas effectively, and solve problems creatively. Are you ready to get started?

Practical Activity

1. Activity Title: 'The Digestion Journey'

2. Project Objective:

The objective of this project is to allow students to understand the processes and functions of the digestive system in a practical and fun way. Students will represent, through the assembly of a concrete and creative model, the different parts of the digestive system and the path of food along this system. The second phase of the project will allow them to understand the relationship between nutrition and the digestive system by creating a balanced menu.

3. Detailed Project Description:

The project will be developed in two main moments.

In the first one, students should research the digestive system, identifying its parts (mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, etc.) and understanding the functions of each one. Then, they should build a model of the digestive system, indicating through various materials (such as modeling clay, paper, straws, glue, scissors, markers, among others) the different parts and the trajectory of the food.

In the second moment, students should research the importance of nutritional balance for the proper functioning of the digestive system. Based on this, they should create a balanced and healthy menu for a day, considering the quantity and variety of necessary nutrients, as well as the amount of calories for the organism.

The research and discussions during the development of the work should be noted to assist in the preparation of the final report.

4. Required Materials:

  • Internet access for research
  • Materials for building the model: modeling clay, paper, straws, glue, scissors, markers, etc.
  • Paper and pen to record information
  • Writing material for the report

5. Detailed Step-by-Step:

First Phase: Research and Model Construction

  1. Divide into groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Conduct research on the digestive system, identifying its parts and functions.
  3. Discuss in groups the collected information, making sure everyone understands.
  4. Plan how you will build your model, considering how you will represent each part and the passage of food through the system.
  5. Build the model as planned, taking care to correctly represent the characteristics of each part and the path of the food.

Second Phase: Research and Menu Development

  1. Research the importance of nutrients for the proper functioning of the digestive system.
  2. Discuss in groups the collected information.
  3. Plan a balanced menu for a day, considering the variety and quantity of necessary nutrients, as well as the amount of calories.
  4. Write the menu, explaining the choice of each item and how it contributes to the nutrition of the organism.

Final Phase: Report Preparation

  1. Organize the information collected during research, debates, and experiments.
  2. Prepare the report, taking into account the four main topics: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used.
  3. Review the report, making sure it is complete and clear.
  4. Submit the report and present the model of the digestive system and the menu to the class.

6. Project Deliverables:

Teams must deliver a physical model of the digestive system, a balanced menu, and a written report. The report should cover aspects of Introduction, Development, Conclusion, and Bibliography, as detailed above.

In the Introduction, students should contextualize the digestive system, its role in the nutrition of the organism, and the purpose of the project. In the Development, they should discuss the theory about the digestive system and nutrition, describe the methodology used to build the model and create the menu, present the results of these activities, and discuss their implications. In the Conclusion, they should recap the most important points, reflect on what they have learned, and draw conclusions about the importance of the digestive system and healthy nutrition. In the Bibliography, they should list all the resources they used to research and complete the project.
