Contextualization
Water is a natural resource of immeasurable value. It is vital for the existence of all forms of life on Earth and is a key component for our health, hygiene, agriculture, industry, and energy. However, we are facing a global water crisis, with a growing demand and decreasing availability of fresh water. Protecting the water we have and using it wisely has never been so important.
Our theme 'Water Use' will explore the water cycle, where and how it is used, and how we can conserve and protect it. The role that each of us plays in the conservation and protection of this vital resource will also be discussed.
Introduction
Earth is often called the 'water planet' due to the abundance of this resource. But did you know that less than 3% of all the water in the world is fresh and accessible for us to use? And much of it is frozen in polar ice caps and glaciers. This means that a tiny amount is actually available for our daily use.
Water is used for many things in our daily lives. We use water for drinking, cooking, cleaning, irrigating our gardens and agricultural fields, supplying our industries, and generating electricity. It is essential for our survival and for the functioning of society.
However, how we use and manage water can have a significant impact on its quality and availability. Excessive use and waste of water, pollution of our rivers and lakes, and climate change are all threatening our supply of fresh water. It is essential that we learn to use water more sustainably to protect this vital resource for future generations.
Practical Activity - 'Water Path: From Source to Daily Use'
Project Objective
The objective of this activity is for students to understand how water is collected, treated, and distributed in their community. They will also identify the multiple ways in which water is used in their daily lives and will be encouraged to think of ways to conserve this precious resource.
Project Description
Groups (of 3 to 5 students) will conduct research and develop multimedia presentations that allow them to share what they have learned about the water path in their communities, the uses of water, and strategies for water conservation.
Required Materials
- Internet access for research
- Paper and pens/pencils for notes
- Presentation software (PowerPoint, Google Slides, Prezi, etc.) for the final presentation
- Camera (optional) to document the water path in their communities.
Activity Steps

Research: Each group should research the path that water takes from the source, through treatment, until it reaches homes in their community. They should identify all stages of this process and the challenges involved.

Documentation: Students may visit (if allowed and safe) locations related to water distribution in their community. They can take photos or make drawings of these locations to use in their presentations.

Identification of Water Uses: Each group will identify the various ways they and their families use water at home, school, leisure, etc. They should include both direct uses (drinking, bathing, washing) and indirect uses (agriculture, industry, electricity).

Conservation Strategies: Each group should research and propose strategies to conserve water in their homes and communities. They should think of creative ways to reduce water usage in their daily lives.

Presentation: Each group should create a multimedia presentation that synthesizes everything they have learned. The presentation should follow the sequence: introduction, water path, water uses, conservation strategies, and conclusion.

Presentation Display: The groups will present their projects to the class. After each presentation, there will be time for questions and comments.

Final Report: Each group should write a final report based on their presentation and project experience. The report should include the topics of Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used.
Project Deliverables
At the end of the project, each group will be responsible for delivering:

Multimedia Presentation: Should include information about the water path, water uses, and water resource conservation strategies.

Final Report: The report should start with an Introduction, where students contextualize the theme and its objective. The Development should describe the methodology used, the research process, and the findings. Additionally, it should cover the discussion of water uses and proposed conservation strategies. The Conclusion should highlight the learnings and key points of the project. The Bibliography should list all sources of information used during the project.
